I've been watching the weather channel all night. I am originally from South Florida (been through Hurricane Andrew).

My heart and thoughts are with you in the Gulf. New Orleans is one of my favorite places on Earth! I will be visiting there again in just over a year from now (timeshare).

I hope you and your families are safe and that your homes will be spared! With love from California...

I hope nobody stayed in Venice. That was a sweet place to come into after 2 weeks in the Gulf.

At least it ain't the big bad boy it was four hours ago. It's still gonna mess some stuff up. 150mph winds are tough.

It will probably gain a little strength again after it crosses over the pass and goes into the sound.

15 - 20 mph winds off and on right now at this AO. The winds are up to 50-60 mph in Mobile. I have a few friends who are sitting tight down there at the momment. We shouldn't get the worst of it until sometime this afternoon.

Lafayette LA. winds 15-20 mi not much rain. We are some 120 to 150 miles away from storm center and still getting some winds. Lucky, we are on the west side of storm. This thing is very large in size.

Good news. We have been trying most of the night to get a hold of one of our friends who staid in New Orleans. Just got of the phone with her 10 minutes ago. The connection was noisy but she had time to say this before she got cut off: "New Orleans is OK. We're safe".

I just drove to Evergreen and back and the wind and rain are starting to pick up here. The roads are almost empty and the skies are ominous.

Gas staions are still open and there is still room at the shelters.

Gulfport and Biloxi are getting slammed. The storm went just east of New Orleans. Winds should be comeing out of the north there now and that will have the effect of pushing the tides back out.

But hell, you all have tv. I guess you should know what's going on better then me.

I am safely in Beaumont. If anyone gets information about the condition of the city after the storm passes, please let me know. I heard some houses were completely under water, but I dont know which section of town. I also heard that 10 people were trapped in a collapsed apartment in Harvey. Did the westbank get hit pretty hard? Anyone have any idea at all about Algiers?

The person with the wife who stayed in New Orleans...is she ok? Sorry if im not making sense. Ive slept maybe 6 hours in 3 days. Driven about 24 in 2 days. Fun.

Considering that there was a possibiliy of a 20 ft storm surge, and 20-30ft wave fronts hitting a city that is 10ft-20ft below sea level and protected by old dikes and levies not updated in decades - I think it was prudent to evacuate New Orleans.

As opposed to an average city where one could just go to higher ground and seek shelter in a large office building that is not quite the case with NO.

And I think the photos showing several collapsed brick building structures affirms it was a prudent move. However, a better question is knowing this possibility why did New Orleans & Louisiana never upgrade. I've heard it talked about for a decade. Dirt dikes should have been cement. (I mean we have breakwaters...big stones. They should have just used a similar structure and poured cement over the top.

Pumps...why were the pumps not moved to elevated structures. Sure they can quote costs but I think most of it was political maneuvering and inefficiency. Had they simple built a 4-story structure to house the pumps the 9th ward might still be intact.

Why when we have known problems do we seem to just completely ignore them?

I wonder if New Orleans will be okay by October??
I am turning 30 and it has been my dream to go to the French Quarter and have beignets and coffee for my birthday. My friend that I were supposed to go with called me yesterday and asked if I had a scuba suit. I didn't get it. This is the most terrible thing when historic places get ruined. It just shows what a short time we have really been on this earth and that nothing is forever... I don't mean to sound doomy.. I understand that people have lost homes .. I am just talking about the other parts of devastating storms and natural disasters. Here in Cali .. its all about the quakes and not being able to predict them.

Does it seem odd to anyone else how the news guys stand right out in the middle of the storm, with shards of twisted metal twirling through the air, telling people just how stupid they would be to emerge outside into the storm?

I saw a guy on CNN deriding some people he spotted across a parking lot, out in the storm. Um, dude, YOU ARE OUT IN THE STORM, TOO! WHY?

Not only that, they go so far as to encourage people who weathered the storm to e-mail photos and stories to them, thereby directly encouraging people to showcase their lack of obedience when evacuation orders were handed down.

Just wondering how long it will be before a reporter is killed in a storm like this. I'm really surprised it hasn't happened in this storm...

This is the exact conversation that I have had with my husband every time we watch hurricane footage.

I think they do not consider danger when reporting. They just concentrate on getting the news out. How effective woulkd it be to disuade people from going out if they were sitting in a studio?

I knew a cameraman who walked backwards over as cliff as he was filming and was killed. He only thought about what was being seen through the viewfinder.

I think it's more about ratings. They could easily report the news from a safe vantage point with the weather in the background; but people are more inclined to watch the ones who are taking the greatest risks.

There have been several tornados touch down here in the metro Atlanta area. I hope everyone in all these areas across the southeast are safe and sound.

Thanks for the Sher update Brad. :-)

I agree... and I'll admit that I've been glued to the coverage since last night. But it certainly could be covered just as well with some common sense infused.

I'll also make this prediction... when the first news guy gets killed by a giant "W" falling from the Wal-Mart he's standing in front of in the midst of a hurricane, there will be a big hoopla about it, and news crews will suddenly decide to keep reporters out of harm's way. And the reporter who died will be fondly remembered as someone who always bravely covered his stories, as opposed to some clown who died while not heeding his own advice.

was watching abc or cbs--- guy is pointing to back window of the camera van and saying debri hit and knocked out the window and at about that time something else flew threw the air and hit the van again... I must admit his look was priceless.. like he was actually scared that time.

We made it through OK here. Power and cable are out at my house. Parts of town still have power.

We have not been able to get hold of our friend in NO since the one call this morning. Getting very conflicting stories about the condition of the city at this point.

Have not been able to contact anyone in Bon Secour. I'll drive down in the morning to check.

My friends in Mobile, the ones I have been able to talk to, are high and dry.
