I have the HP Photosmart 1218 (for over a year now). It has slots on the side to directly download (upload?) images from CF I or II, Microdrive or SM cards to the computer, or to print directly from the cards. I have always been able to print an index or even prints directly from the SM card with images taken with my FujiFilm 2.3MP camera - as the manufacturer toots being able to use the printer without being hooked up to a computer. Now that I have a 5MP camera, I have only been able to use it as a USB card reader to save images to the computer hard drive. When I try to print an index or prints, it says "no images". I know I need to probably call HP/Compaq (whoever they are nowadays), but hoped someone here may have the answer instead. Just a shot in the dark.... Anyone?

I have the 1215 and rarely use the slots...good thing I paid extra for them, huh?! LOL. Anyway, I think the printer has it's own little mini-processor/computer in it. It probably isn't capable of handling such huge files. Just a guess though. Do you actually take your printer around without your computer anyway? Have you tried inserting a card with only one image saved to it?
Good luck! |

I haven't tried with only one image.. I will and report back.
I had told the school my kids go to that I have that capability so that I could set up a little booth for a fundraiser day or some special event at the school. Now with my new camera, I may have to retract that. Seems odd that HP would make a printer with functions only compatible with smaller image files since the idea is to get a good quality print.

You may be able to eek by at a school fundraiser by reducing your image quality settings in your camera. It'd make smaller files, anyway. |

Only one image on SM card now: "Cannot print: Photo Corrupted". Blast!
If I reduce the file size, how will that affect the print quality in such a situation? Print up to 8X10, but have the ability to print multiple sizes on one sheet, for example: 1-5X7, 1-3X5, 2-wallets for quick photo package stuff.

Sorry...tongue in cheek waste of time I guess. I know what a newbie is. I was just going off on another one of my tangents...imagining what a newbe (which I perceived to be a typo of newbie...but I don't think there is an official spelling actually) might be. Forgive me.
Lisa (thrilled to have someone fooled into thinking I might actually know something about these gadgets) :) |

My best advice...try printing the lowest quality setting that you think you can get away with and move up from there (that is if reducing quality works to fix the slot problem). I have a 3.3 and can get away with an 8x10 on hq (2 levels down from top quality)...easily with no cropping. I''m sure you could reduce image quality quite a bit with 5.5 and still get a decent print. Wasn''t there a thread on image size and quality last week? Maybe that will help.
Are there any file-saving options on your camera? Maybe there''s something you could change around there too.

Okay, Lisa: I just changed the setting to: SQ, 1280X960, 1/2.7 compression. It just printed out the index of 2 photos. Thanks! But I'm still bummin' that it won't accept larger files. How will these print? I'll try and see.

Hey, at least you got it to print the index! That's progress. I really don't think your print quality will suffer much at all. And it's not as if you'll be using your printer free-standing a great percentage of the time anyway. Chin up...it's not that bad! |

BRB...
I just printed an 8X10 to see. It's decent enough for that purpose! Thanks again...

Woo hoo!! One more thing...I used my 1215 for a year before I realized I could switch to a super-high quality print if I manually selected photo paper in the settings instead of letting the printer automatically identify the paper type. It made a really big difference. So, if you haven't figured that little secret out yet...give it a try. |

Okay, I'll look into that, too.
So, the quality at 8X10 is not affected by the file size too much (at a dry run...) but is that because of the 5MP? I know this is a tangent, but I'm still not clear on how a photo is affected by file size vs. by megapixels. Anyone?

I think the print quality is limited by your printer. There is a maximum quality (dpi) it can print and I''m guessing the 5 mp is far beyond that limit. If you sent your 2 identical images of different file sizes to a pro-printer, I think you would be able to see much more of a difference in the quality results.

"Megapixels" is just the number of pixels in each dimension multiplied by each other and divided by 1 million. The uncompressed file size (what shows in the Photoshop "Image Size" dialog) is directly determined by this number. The "file size" on disk is dependent on the efficiency of the compression (if any) used, which is affected by both the setting used and the actual content of the image. A file with many colors and lots of lines and detail (Fall foliage) will be larger relative to one with flat colors and less detail (fog over a lake), even if they have exactly the same number of pixels.
Actual photo quality will be determined by the actual number of pixels and the amount of degradation introduced by the compression. --Paul
