I'm a bit confused here. Just how many variations are there of this lens, and how do they differ? I have a "Sigma 70-300mm f/4-5.6 II APO Macro Super" as the box says. It looks like this: //images.ldlc.com/photosldlc/00/00/41/51/LD0000415173_2.jpg

I've also seen these different versions:
//www.bhphotovideo.com/images/largeimages/391074.jpg
//194.251.244.158/auctionimages/c/29/6b0f293167e5859b69f2f99afb637-orig.jpg
//www.gentec-intl.com/GentecInc/HR/SIGMA/70-300mm.jpg
//images.gfx.no/5/5721/0.jpg

What's the deal here? The one i have produces images, that are close to the sharpness of my 50mm f/1.8.

Anyone?

i'd say the ones with the gold ring are different.

I know the gold ring is the older one and does not interact correctly with Canon Digital EOS. The won't re-chip them anymore either.
The red ring is the newest. It is the one I have myself, and functions correctly.

Oh.. Neat. What are the new DG versions? i can't seem to find the non-DG version i have from sigmaphoto.com anymore.

Edit: Btw.. the images for the red striped and non-red striped seem to be switched in the lens database.

I believe the item you may be looking for is this lens?

Just a word of note. Other lenses to check out in that range include

Tamron 75-300mm f3.8-5.6 LD Macro $129 (1:3.9)
Tamron 70-300mm f3.8-5.6 Macro $159 (1:2)
Tamron 28-200mm f3.8-5.6 XR IF Macro $289 (1:4)
Tamron 28-300mm f3.5-6.3 XR IF Macro $399 (1:2.9)
New Canon 70-300 F4-5.6 IS (3rd generation) no word on price yet.

EX is Sigma's "L" designation
XR is Tamron's.

"The improved DG lens design corrects for various aberrations. This lens is specially coated to get the best color balance whilst cutting down on ghosting caused by reflections from the digital image sensor."

I got the non-DG version back in May or so for $170 new. Great lens, the DG only makes it better.
at 253mm ISO 800

Just remember to keep the shutter speed up to reduce shake-induced blur and have sharp images.

There are many versions, but I'm rather sure that the one you own is considered the 'best' of them.

Cool. Only paid 180 euros for a slightly (2 weeks) used one. The previous owner had just gotten a great deal on a 70-200 f/2.8L IS USM.

Anyhow. Thanks for the help.

They did an article in a UK magazine about 2 months ago about budget lenses in this range and the one you have came out on top by miles. The suprise for me was that they rated it above the comparable Canon and Nikon lenses (not their top glass obviously).

When I got mine I wasn't all that thrilled to be honest, but after a few weeks of use I have grown to really appreciate it, its the dreaded camera shake at the longer focal lengths thats the problem for me.
