		| | Anyone know of any freebee B&W PS actions I could try? I'd be interested in seeing how they work... |

		| | I haven't seen any free ones that I like. Fred Miranda;s BW Workflow Pro is very nice, and it's under 20 bucks.

		| | Bill's B&Wisn't bad, though it still needs some curve tweaking once it's done. Of course i'm all about contrasty BWs, so maybe it's just me.
 I like the quadtone method best. I can post my formula or the action if anyone cares to see it.

		| | I've been very happy with DigiDaan's B&W conversion action, which is free. Before you start searching all over for the download link, it is on his "how does it work" page. |

		| | Link to the action is here
 basically it's this:

 1. Image-->Mode-->Greyscale
 2. Image-->Mode-->Duotone (load-->choose whichever quadtone you like best)
 3. Image-->Mode-->RGB Color
 4. Curves Dialog Box (will need tweaking to suit the image)
 5. Unsharp Mask (ditto to the tweaking)

 PS has a billion or so quadtone options, but my favourite is Ken Lee's Bronze, which you can get from HERE

 Lemme know if you have any questions.

 So, to get optimum results out of this you'd want to make a BW conversion from RGB first, then go to grayscale and run from there, I'd think? I'm not too fond of how straight-from-RGB grayscales look...

 No...you can't convert to a quadtone from RGB...you have to convert to greyscale first. It won't look great as a greyscale, but the quadtone fixes that right up :)

 Thanks for the post Pedro. BTW - the download of the zip file from Ken Lee's site does not work.

 You misunderstand; FIRST I'd do a B/W conversion in RGB, THEN I'd convert that RGB file to a (better) grayscale file and follow your steps from there. Sorry I wasn't clearer.

 Gotcha. I'll have to give that a go...never tried it that way. thanks for the tip.

 BTW I uploaded a new action that has the correct tones for the Ken Lee quad built into it (i think). I'll see if i still have the zip file from when i dowloaded his...

 edit: JB HERE arethe Ken Lee Bronze Quads (they're up on my site...not sure if that's allowed or not. I guess if it pisses Ken off he'll let me know :P)

 edit again: To give an idea of the results, the pic below was done using the quadtone method above, and the Ken Lee colours.

 Thanks Pedro - just a note. The action contains a fixed reference to the quadtone file at a location which requires PS CS2.
 In order to allow other people to use this they will need to re-record the action pointing to the location where they saved the quadtone (in my case C:\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe Photoshop CS\Presets\Duotones\Quadtones\Bronze Quadtones)
