Even here at DPC you really have no rights - it's not a democracy and 2 owners set all the rules and change them if and when they see fit. |
I certainly don't like the idea of anybody reading my mail, and I'm no gmail fanboy (I have an account, but I don't use it) - but realistically, email is sent cleartext across the internet - anybody can read anybody else's messages if they really want to. For me it was the ads that crossed over the line - we are bombarded by so many ads all the time, why on earth would I want my personal messages spammed up? |

yeah like they won't use your cell phone for marketing purposes. Text ads, cold calls etc.
How does reading my emails help them when I search? No it targets ads when I view and allows them to tailor the spam I get
As for ciruit city etc, I dont share my address and phone with them when I walk into their stores. |

I did get my Gmail account since I originated this thread.
They aren't "reading" my Email messages.
If "they" are, "they" need to get a life.
The adds are automated on content--much the same way your Google searches are--they don't return great results because the "understand" what you're saying, it's all done with keywords and probability models.
If it weren't they would have a hard time making it profitable--or even attempting to make it so.
Hell, I don't even have time to read all the stuff I get and I've been 99.9% spam-free at work for 5 years! Who'd have the staff.......sorry, ranting. |

I don;t use gmail for all my email - just use it when a site requires an email address for me to register or log in. That way if they share it with spammers, my "real" email boxes don't get overloaded with crap.

No person is reading your gmail. A computer scans your email, looking for keywords, and that's that.

So you'd rather use Yahoo or Hotmail, which has flashing, migraine-inducing animated ads all over the place for dating services, cheap flights and diet wonder pills? I love that google has, for the most part, used only simple, non-invasive text ads. And personally, I'd much rather see ads for things I might actually be interested in, rather than things I have no absolutely no interest in.
And I'm no gmail fanboy either. I have an account but don't use it. What I am is a fastmail fanboy. If you're worried about google reading your mail or want an ad-free email service with TONS of features, then check out fastmail. They rock! (And they have a bunch of domains to choose from!)

This is for all the people complaining about the ads in Gmail.
YOU CAN set up Outlook or Outlook Express to pull your e-mail off the website. Then you don't see any ads. Also by doing this you create two copies of the e-mail. If you delete it from Outlook it is still on the webmail. So if you accidentally screww up you can get it back.

Are people still actually using Outlook Express? I refer to these products as "Lookout" and "Lookout Express".
You're much better off ditching them for the free Thunderbird mailer. |

There are more options to gmail than yahoo or hotmail - I don't even have accounts with them.
Am a geek - I host my own domains and run my own mail server. An extreme solution, but it works for me. Besides, it's fun! |
