I like the idea of having a strip to calibrate to, but I think it should be moved further down or somewhere away from the image. I'm finding myself distracted by it.

I'm just confused by it. I mean, sure, it looks pretty and all, but what am I supposed to do with it?

you use it to calibrate the brightness and contrast on the screen...if you can't see a difference in the lightest ones, make it darker. vice versa for the dark squares. |

You're supposed to be able to see each individual segment. If not, you need to adjust your monitor brightness.
Another option could be to be able to turn it off under preferences.
"could be to be able to"...is this correct grammar? :)

So it is shown on every image page? Maybe it could be somewhere more centralized. It wouldn't change from page to page so why would we need to see it over and over? |

It's easiest if each page is generated from the same template. It's on each photo because people start voting at random entries. It could be on the thumbnails page insead of on the photo page. |

Good idea AND correct grammar -- a rare thing, well-done. |

i think it's important to point out that it's as important to create your images with the correct calibration as it is to see them with the correct calibration. |

I just want to say that it is a very useful tool. I had to do a kind of quick calibration on my laptop (and check if the onboard calibration patterns match with what I normally see) and somebody pushed the wrong buttons on my main computer's monitor (Brightness was down to 6 out of 100...). This site's voting calibration strip along with dpreviews review calibration strip for assurance made it really easy.
Thanks for including that.
The laptop needed brightness, gamma and contrast adjustment. The main computer's monitor needed 50 points more brighness and a little less contrast.
