I wasn't home this afternoon when Wendy from Calumet called me back... argggh! I need to call them tomorrow, hopefully I'm not too far down the list!

Hurro,

I was in my local store today, and the expect the demo one 15th-20th of September, and sales models 1 October. Apparently 3 people have put down a deposit already, one of them cancelled a 1DsII that was backodered..

If I spend more money on camera gear this year it will be for another lens, and a second 20D. 12Mp and FF isn't worth the asking price for what I want to do.. Lots of folks will front up thought I imagine.

Cheers, Me.

I think my brand-new 20D will serve for the moment... I really do... Anyway I'm sort of committed to the 1.6 sensor, since I have two EF-S lenses.

I will buy the 5D in january, I want to read some user reviews on DPreview and FredMiranda first ;)

and I can't justify buying 2 cameras the same year.. got my 20D in january ;)

Tempted....

I have been saving for a 24-70L, but I might be tempted to upgrade the 20D for a 5D. Depends largely on the reviews. I am looking to break into stock photography and the extra resolution and quality would help. I am also a keen Landscaper so from that point of view wider shots with my 17-40L would be appreciated.

I may decide to go for the 24-105 instead of the camera upgrade... looks like this might be a good 'walk around' lens.

Well, I officially have a 5D (body only) order in with Calumet Photo... I'm number 50 (!!) on their world-wide list. I'll be in the first or at worst second batch of cameras. Now if only Canon can beat the expected delivery dates :-)
September is going to be one very long month :-(

DrNick,

I was told by Canon that they have production difficulties, and that there won't be many cameras making the market this year.. So the faster one gets in line THE BETTER :D

After the arrival of the 5D, the 10D will have to go in for minor surgery to correct a very mild backfocus issue. After that, it's slated to be a backup/2nd body. If I find I'm never using it, I may at some point in the future sell it, but that would be a way off.

No chance i'm going that way, the 5D is in no way an adequate replacement for the 20D, let alone an improvement.

I´m a bit confused, since the price diffrent between the 1D Mark II and the 5D is so little.....for about the same amount of cash I think the Mark II is a much smarter move even though it isnt full frame, I mean thats a monster of a camera:)

I was hoping that the 5D would be a little cheper:/

but hey I´m still very happy with my 10D :D

the 5D and 1DMkII are completely different machines, for dfferent purposes. The 1DMkII is pretty much a sports shooter's machine, or for other uses where...
- The high frame rate is a great benefit
- The crop factor is not an issue (wide angle is not often required)
- The highest resolutions are not a requirement (the work will not be printed large)
Eventually, the 1.3x crop will go away, with only the 1.6 and full-frame cams remaining. That doesn't mean the 1DMkII is a lame duck, it's a fantastic cam, and one that I considered, but the 5D fits my needs much better.
I don't at all "get" riot's comment. The 5D is an incredible advancement, and the price is well justified by the feature set. Admittedly, if you don't see the need for full-frame, it looks a lot less attractive; then, for sure, the 1DMkII is a better choice.

yeah, but why not wait for a year more and get a full grown full frame body for the same price as the 5D is now?..
08/27/2005 03:51:53 PM · #49
cause there's always better stuff coming out... At some point you have to buy if you want in.

Naw, I'm primarily a sports shooter. Now, the 1DMk2N... that has my heart pumping!
