*SIGH* Not really a rant, but an observation.
Why is it when we try to make a photo more of a piece of art we get hammered in the scoring? Maybe the way I cropped my photo is what I felt was best for an artistic look? Does everything have to be landscape? Yes I agree my current entry would be more appropriately cropped landscape, but the use of light and dark with the blue, I felt had a stronger impact in portrait mode.
Ah well... no accounting for taste :-D

I think you have to be pretty observant of the people here also. You can figure out what they like over time. Look at the comments on the RESULTS page. They will give you a hint of what will fly here and what won't. Look at your photos after the challenge is over. Critique them again yourself and compare the comments to the photo. Sometimes the comments are someone's viewpoint that is looking at your photo from a different background and different culture. Some just won't get what your photo means to you. Then there will be some comments to change it more one way and some more to change it more the opposite way. Take each of these comments and apply them to your photo and try to see it from their point of view. Half the time you might say to yourself "I see what they mean". Going through this process can make you a better photographer. In my opinion, the photograph starts in the mind, or in the mind's eye. I'm always looking for interesting things around me. It has to hit me in my visual senses. I look at things from every angle, I even look behind me. I also study the top photos to see what makes them so good. It's usually easy to see. Don't get discouraged and keep on keepin' on! Hey Danny, maybe we can get together and have that cup of coffee this Saturday morning. Let me know. This IS the Rant forum I hope.

heh. i got yelled at for saying people here have no taste. lol.
so far i've made only a few cropping suggestions. usually it's to position the subject differently within the frame, or to take away distractions from the subject.
i'm trying to leave as many non-stupid comments as i can this round. i've only voted on about 25 so far, and i've left comments on almost all of them.
the trick is to be able to tell the purposeful artistic decisions from the accidental, the errors, and the camera. unfortunately, you can't write a tutorial on that. sometimes stuff isn't thought out, and sometimes it is. there's not really a clear way to tell the difference. sometimes it's not very easy to pick purely stylistic elements. for instance, i run my pictures through a resize and sharpen process that makes them look a little mosaicked. this is a combination of a concious decision of my part, and the fact that my camera is really, really bad. even if i had the money for one of those 2000 buck dslr, i'd still use this little pos because it gives me this result.

Hey, I'd love to get together for that cup of coffee, but I have an early morning meeting then going out to my mom's in Terrell for the day on Saturday. Should have done it last weekend, it was McKinney's Dicken's of a Christmas. Let's see how the 14th shapes up.

Ok, I'll put the 14th on my calendar and see what happens!
