The large number of photographers on this site can be overwhelming so how do choose a favourite?

Initially, I was choosing favourites based on the ratings I gave for their challenge entries. Over time I've discovered that a photographer's best work is not necessarily in the challenges but in their portfolio. I haven't come up with any concrete criteria for choosing favourites but some things that have driven me to choose someone as a favourite are:

Highly emotive and engaging images
Strong composition and use of light
Landscapes with depth and feeling

Here's my current list of favs: (in the order they were added)

What inspires you to add someone to your fav list?

For me it's the person inside the photograph that ultimately makes me decide to add them to my favorites list. I know it's hard to gauge someone over the Internet but after time of watching there post, seeing how they view photography, and visiting there profile you tend to grasp what kind of individual they are.

Sometime I choose someone that is opposite of me and sometime I choose someone that I can relate too. I don't choose a favorite photographer because of his/her scores, votes, comments. All that is irreverent. It the combination of there personality and work outside of the challenges that makes me click the fav button.

Anyone else care to share how they choose?

I asked a while back to be able to organize it kinda like my portfolio.....a couple are friends that I discuss a lot with. Most I have looked at their portfolios and really liked most of the work they have done.

When an image particularly engages/impresses me, I am motivated to seek out the photographer's profile. When I find a significant group of images in the profile that engage me at the same level, I make the photographer a favorite.

I chose my favs from their personal style. I think those that try to fit cliches in their photos or that mold to the majorities interest are a million in a million. Those who can take anything and still manage to have their own flare be interworked in the photo are truly talented. Joey l. is one right off the bat that does this... all his photos whether they are landscape, people or objects all seems to scream JOEY. Ansel and the greats all have this much needed flare to stand out among the rest. (Still searching for mine).

different ideas make me choose a photographer. anyone can be a "professional" if they put enough time into it, but the ideas are something that are unique to each and not everyone has new ideas. when someone interprets a challenge in a new and interesting way, I usually think about adding them ... The ironic part is, I really need to work on my photo skills rather than MY ideas!

I choose a favorite photographer foremost because I like their photographs and want easy links to check their new work.

So, when you're not on my favorite list, it doesn't mean I don't like you and I don't need to like you to to put you on the list. :)

They pay me a small fee weekly to stay in my favorites.
