Sounds like you need to reload Photoshop. What version?

CS...reloading will take time that I really dont have, hopin maybe there is some kind of "revert to default" function at the least

I have not run into that problem with my CS at work. I run 7 at home and both are on MAC. I sthe shift key on your keyboard working right? I have had mine stick before and go out because of so much use. Just a thought. You can try to reload just parts of Photoshop. If you had a snapshot of what's on your hard-drive you might reload your preferences. Hope you get this problem resolved and sorry I couldn't be of anymore help.

I'bve tried to get this function to stop working, hoping that would explain what happened to you, and I can't. I'd hoped it was something simple like caps lock ON disabled it, but no joy.

Out of curiosity, what DOES happen when you hold down shift and click again? Nothing?

my shift buttin does work though...if I hold shift I can still get the straight vertical or horizontal lines, i just cant click in one location then shift+click another and get a straight line.

...thanks for the help so far though

Took an hour from first post to your last...could have had PS reloaded more than 5 times. I recently had to reload AND download and that was less than 30 minutes. (C:
