Additionally, the difference in the quality dropoff *seems* quite heavy on the S2 because of the multiplication to take a 6-72mm lens to be equivalent to a 36-432mm.

I'm with the other guys that say that a picture will look better if cropped from a DSLR and even upsized.


I would suggest that that you take the camera in to an authorized service center & have it checked out. I looked around at several reviews of your camera on sites like dpreview.com and although they report focusing errors in the telephoto range thay don't report your problem. it sounds like you might have got a lemon.

UPDATE

I decided to go with the Olympus E300 with the 50-200 instead of the panasonic. I don't think I could ever deal with the shutter lag, and focusing on an EVF.

I bought the e300 from dell with the 14-45 thanks to a tip from scalvert. Now I just need to liquidate some equipment, maybe a one of my D70s, to buy the 50-200.

Good choice. That'll solve your problems with dust, weight, noise and focusing all at once. Enjoy it!
