Hi I have a cannon rebel xt and a 28-135 usm is lens. My daughter figure skates and I can't be there when she competes, so one of her friends will take pictures for me... Well there comes the problem, I put the camera on "action" but ice rinks aren't light the best so the camera steps down the shutter speed. So the pictures come out blurry. They need to be taken a few steps higher on the shutter speed and open up the f stop.
Ok so how can I give a little girl the camera and still get usable pictures?
thanks Bob

Predict the settings that need to be used and set it like that so that the camera holder can just push the button?

bump up the ISO if it isn't already. |

I take a lot of hockey photos and when I'm playing I usually have someone take shots of my game. I always set the ISO to about 800, put it on apeture priority with it wide open, and set it to the middle focus point. This usually gave speeds between 1/125th and 1/500th. With the IS, that should be plenty of speed. |

I've done a lot of artistic skating photos for our local roller skating rink. It's very tricky! Most of what I have photographed have been state championships so you have to look at the bad points - No flash allowed, very dark lighting and fast moving objects! Bad combination! The success I have had is with the following settings:
135mm f2.8 lens
Custom white balance (to grey card)
Exposure boosted up to +2
ISO 800
shutter priority at 1/80 (sometimes I do vary this a little just to try something different.
Aperture auto set to 2.8...if you have faster, even better
I use manual focus because my lens has trouble auto focussing with the dark light and moving object...yeah it's a bit dodgy!
SHOOT IN RAW!
Then, when I process, I convert my RAW file by boosting the exposure up again. Then run it through neat image to remove the grain and a bit of USM in PS!
It may not be perfect but the skaters have been really happy with the photos and they have said a lot of photographers they've had in the past refuse to do it again because it's very hit and miss and they were sick of getting abused for shocking photos or photos not coming out! I'm not saying these are perfect but they are happy! I will be getting a few new lenses shortly so I can't wait to try it with some of them!
Here are some of my results!
They look a little over processed when you look closely! Maybe that's something I still have to learn! And I don't see why a 13 year old can't take photos as long as they know how to work a camera!

In the "Action" Mode, the maximum ISO is 400. You need to use the "Av" setting and select higher ISO, I'd recommend atleast 800 or if needed 1600. Now select the lowest f value (I think 3.5) and see what the shutter speed is. If it is about 1/125 or faster, then things may be good to go. If the shutter speed is still low, then turn up the ISO. If you shoot with slower shutter speeds, then all you'll get is a skater blurring by, unless you pan to follow the skater.
Good luck.

Well I got to spend an hour trying to shoot my daughter today, mixed results, I was trying to take the pictures like I didn't know what I was doing, not too far from the truth.
First I used the 28-135 and at about 50mm and f4 shutter was 50 -80 depending where she was. still not the greatest results.
then I switched to the kit lens, worst....
then I started playing with shutter priority and was able to capture the pictures without too bad of blur...
what I think I want (remember I'm giving the camera to a 13 who has never used anything like this) is a fast prime lens maybe 60-80
does this sound like a good way to go?
also if you can change the iso in action/sports mode I can't figure it out, batteries dead right now, but I swear it was at 800 already, nevermind it was 400.
thanks for the help
Bob

If I'm not mistaken... when its in the action/sports mode it picks the ISO automatically depending on the situation. If you go to AV or Shutter Priority you can set the ISO. I would suggest going with your fastest lens in AV mode set to the widest aperture... on about 800 ISO. That should give you some decent shutter speeds. |

I would definitely not use the kit lens, its just to wide, and it sounds like you're going to want more zoom. I would shoot on Aperture Priority, stick to the widest aperture and set the ISO to 800. |

The Action mode limits the maximum ISO to 400, that's why you got a shutter speed so low at 1/40. That's too slow if you want to freeze action. You need to set the camera to AV mode and leave it wide open, then set the ISO to probably 800 or if needed 1600, turn on the IS (stabilizes hand shakes and may smooth if you pan), and consider using multiple exposure shutter release mode. All the thirteen year old has to do now is compose and squeeze the shutter release.
