I know I'll be upgrading, specifically for the architecture side of things. I'll be keeping the 300D as a backup, but I like the idea of the 5D for many reasons.

1. The size should be similar to that of the 10D/300D which fits in my hands PERFECTLY.
2. 12.8mp
3. Full Frame
4. 2.5" LCD screen
5. Magnesium Body (sure its not weather proof, but I hardly bring it out in the rain anyway)

I'm just really excited for this, and cant wait to upgrade.

Give me 4500 bucks and I'll do it in a heartbeat :-D!

Sounds like it's going to be a great cam.

if you're upgrading just for the Architecture photos, I suggest upgrading your lens. Get a tilt-shift lens. While the full frame capture is great and works extremely well with wide angle lenses, I think my 20D is still a good camera specially since I don't have $4000 to blow. The 2.5" LCD is great too but unless they improved the resolution, it would still be hard to see in some light conditions. The 5D has the same 9 point focus but the 3200 ISO is great.

I have a 2 gig card. It would be interesting to find out how many high-res shots taken at RAW it can accommodate. LOL!

Let us know when you get it.

I am getting a tilt shift, but the widest they make is 24mm, not nearly wide enough to do indoor work.

Not interested in 5D

Too expensive
Don't want FF, happy with 1.6 crop
Want more fps
Too many MP's, I'd like 8-10

I'm waiting for the 20D's replacement, if it's a big jump will get that, if not will get 20D with discount. I'm also wonderinf if 1DMIIN will be cheaper, if so I'll consider that as well.

its sorta funny that canon announces a 5D immediately after Konica-Minolta announces its 5D Should be interesting with two 5Ds out there...

A chap at the camera store hinted at the 20D being superseeded by a potential '30D' in the not-too distant future. I'm guessing this was probably just sales spin, but he reckoned 12MP. But I guess a high mega-pixel prosumer camera would be the next best move for canon.

My 2c, don't ask me his source, I don't know...

I want to see the lawsuit if it happens.

To me, naming it the 5D despite KM already having one is a little bit "nyah, nyah" childish on the part of Canon.. but hey, when you're the leader of a materialistic marketplace, anything goes right?

Have to run out of unique model designations sometime.

(Of course, it's all still rumor at this point too.. Canon *could* still name it the 3D.. or it might just be a really good fake job.. who knows. I'm still waiting for it to appear in DPReview's news)

We do interior shots typically with medium formats with polaroid proofs. Let's see, the TS lens runs about $1300 + $4000 for the 5D. That's nearly $5500 just on a kit and lens alone. Have you done much architectural photography? The reason I ask is because I've seen how tough the field is. I'm often the client :)

Yes. Rumor is that the 30D will be coming out sooner than expected. via the Canon underground :) Lol!

As I remember, the rumors about the XT was pretty much spot on. The rumors about 5D seems to be spot on in my opinion as well. I guess we'll know soon. Personally, I think Canon "leaks" these out a head of time to generate publisity.
08/16/2005 09:35:21 PM · #17
Have canon actually 'anounced' anything? I was pretty certain the release is almost entirely rumour based still, so this could mean the name '5D' is meaningless. This camera could easily be released with another model number.

We're all expecting the announcement on monday the 22nd.

looks like sloppy photoshop work to me. And the person who "leaked" just happened to get their hands on a promotional photo? come on! b

look at the photo on the left and notice thing where the camera strap attaches? Not look at the image on the right... where is it?

Yep I believe we found who leaked the info. I guess he's tired of his A95 :P

If I had $4500 to upgrade to a new DSLR body I think I'd go for the D2X. You get the 12 mp, the 2.5 LCD, AND 8 fps. Full frame doesn't excite me too much. All your lenses become shorter focal length. I think it is cheaper to buy wide angle lenses for the 1.6 crop than to buy true telephoto focal length for a full frame.
08/16/2005 11:47:42 PM · #24
I don't really see the benefit of buying a camera body with a 35mm sized sensor when you already have the 20D with very low noise levels in a smaller sensor. Your sacrificing your telephoto reach to gain some wide angle, but Who's going to want to fiddle with the perspective distortion with the ultra wides in PS anyway, unless you have plans on shelling out another $1200+ for a tilt/shift lens. So now you not only have to shell out more money for the body, but also have to shell out a lot more money in lenses to recover your lost tele reach and gain the questionable benefit of the ultra wides. Sounds like a $10,000 investment really.
