My new apple ibook is on its way, and now I will be wanting to move this PC down to the basement.
What do I need to setup a home network that will work with both Mac and Pc? How do I set it up? Thanks for the help in advance.

First do you want wired or wireless, next do you want both machines to have access to all you stuff like printers and internet? Do you have broadband? If yes to all these questions get a wireless router with a print server something like this. if you want wired and this if you want wireless and want to share USB external harddrives.

well my old network was really easy, i just had a simple internet network, well here how it was setup my cable modem into a 4 port router than from there my computers simply plugged into the ports on the router and then they all had internet access. Very easy and simple. But now am using both ethernet and wireless connections for my internet access and also sharing my printers now. Well let us know what you kind of network u want.

It will definitely be Wireless. No printers needed to be on the network.
I want both computers to have internet. I've got the cable modem.

there will be distance limitations for a wireless network. now you can get creative in the placement of the wireless router to prevent walls and floors from interfering in signal strength. Also with a wireless network, unless you set it up real secure your network is open to all to see and use. A good hacker will get into your wireless network reguardless of your security measuers, the old lady next door wont know its there, but some one who IS looking will get in, its just a matter of time before they do.
I prefer a wired network any day of the week

FWIW, any home network you set up will be compatible with Mac and PC. you will just need your router to automatically assign ip addresses to your machines (or put them in yourself, but auto-assigning normally works great).
i have found that linksys wireless routers come with great instructions for setting them up. BUT to configure the router, you will have to have it near a computer that can physically be connected to it with an ethernet cable. for that reason, i would think about putting the router in the basement where your stationary pc is going to be. then you can have your pc plugged in and your ibook can be wireless, so you can use it on the couch or in the john. :) |

I did mine the old fashioned way! I had cabling installed in my new house by someone I knew. My cable modem is shared through my PC to the other 3 in the house. I will be setting it up as a gateway router as soon as money permits though because if I ever need to restart my PC (the host machine) then the others go down and quite often I need to reset them as well. I just found that wireless was far too expensive for what I was using it for. |
