Is this too much noise for a RAW image? ISO is 400 f5.6 at 1/4000. I was out playing this morning and it looks like it has alot of noise in the image. What do you think?

Where is the image?

EDIT: Oh there it is.... my computer is slow today.

Ya I get noise on my camera too at RAW.... WTF?

Yeah that's a hell of a lot of noise. I have no clue why you're getting it though. I'm new to this dSLR schtick. This is straight from the camera? No photoshopping at all, right? What parameters are you set at? High contrast, saturation, and sharpness all contribute noise as byproducts, but even so this seems a lot...

do you have your camera set to +2 sharpen?

Hmmmmm good point.

Its straight from the camera. I converted to TIFF then to jpg. I thot when shooting RAW that the parameters such as those didnt matter, b/c the photograph is taken "as is" per the scene and there i no processing in camera except for converting the analog light photons to digital pixels? But my settings in jpg format are +1 in sharpening, contrast and saturation. Any ideas?

What lens did you use??

I would say it is to much noise. Here is one I took at ISO 400 - @1/1000 -f/6.3 - 200mm and it's was taken in JPG mode and has had three rounds of sharpening @ 18/40/0, 150/.3/0 Darken 100%, and 150/.3/0 Darken 50%.

*NOTE: just posted 100% Crop for comparison.

By any chance when you were in the raw editing, did you push the exposure much?
08/15/2005 05:36:31 PM · #11
no pushing in RAW editing...i converted to TIFF then to jpg. thats all. be back in a few hours and ill do a test of different lenses and such.

Lenses don't affect noise. I'm not sure what it would be unless there's something weird in the tranformation to tif and jpeg.

Well i know you have a Canon and I have a Nikon with the same problem.
So perhaps the solution is the same. I read your post earlier so i ran my own tests to see if I can fix this noise problem.

I just got my camera last week and have not looked at the settings yet. I took some pictures of clouds (best way to check for noise). I looked at them and sure enough noise. I then saw an ISO setting..... it was set to 650, default factory setting. Changed it to 200. Tested it and the noise is gone. Even at 400 it looks great.

Any whooo hope this helps.

Okay, here's my first post in the forums... be gentle with me.. :)

1/4000th of a second? - Seems very high shutter speed. This looks like a normal image shot in bright sunshine. So try lowering the shutter speed to something like 1/125 seconds. Change the aperture to F7 or higher (depending on exposure), and go with ISO200. 1/4000 doesn't sound right to me (the ISO400 probably caused this)

The problem is that the iso 400 on the rebel xt should be cleaner than this. I do agree that iso 400 wasn't probably needed for these condition, but who knows, we only see a crop, maybe we completely missed the nascar flying by at the bottom?

That is about as much noise as I get at ISO 3200, so I wonder if there's a problem with the camera.

errrrr...
why are you suing iso 400 outside?

You're right. And I probably should have checked his portfolio before criticising the choice of shutter speed!... :-o

The major problem here is that visible noise isn't a direct function of ISO level: it's really a ratio of how much real information (signal) is in the picture, versus how much noise has been added (from the electronics or otherwise). A dark, smooth, single-color area is going to show about maximum noise for a given shot. Try deliberately overexposing that same shot, just shy of blowing visible highlights, and the noise should drop away quite a bit. I shoot a lot with the EC in-camera set to +2/3 stop, and then pull it back out during RAW import for this reason.

Another oddity: most camera sensors are much more sensitive to green than to red or blue, which means that normally exposed shots are underdigitizing both the red and blue channels. If you have enough light to work with, you can get a more even color exposure by using a slight magenta filter, and then fixing the color balance during RAW import, which in turn will have the effect of reducing visible noise in red and blue areas -- but this only works if you have enough shutter speed headroom to lose a half stop of light.

i just did some more test....it must have been an oddity because everything else is looking good now. even up to iso 1600...it has less noise than the shot i posted. thanks guys for all the comments and help!!
