This little guy posed for several minutes atop my motor home. For scale, the rail is one inch thick. I think this may be a Sharp Shinned Hawk, but not sure. This photo taken about 25 miles East of Albuquerque at an altitude of 6700 feet. Any help with identification is much appreciated.

No problem..nice pics but sorry, I cannot identify the bird. I get the impression it is rather young though..not sure why.

It's very small for a hawk. (look at the nut and bolt for omething to gage the size) A Northern Harrier doesn't have the banded tail, not even the imature variety.

Try Merlin.

Sharpies shouldn't be arriving in the NM area until around late September through sometime in October depending on the weather.

Merlin

Immature (stripped breast) Cooper's Hawk, they probably nest near you. Long rounded tail separates it from Sharp-shinned. Merlin wouldn't have that long of tail. Northern Harrier (marsh hawk) has a face like an owl.

From Birdzilla.com and VTRUAN, consensus is an immature Cooper's Hawk.

Thanks all for your help!

Good job guys. Didn't have time to put in my 2 cents.

I'll gladly concede that one. I was haveing problems with the Merlin because of the tail, but thought maybe it was just perspective.

Also it looked to have too much color on the throat for most Merlins.
