Usually if you're happy with the lens, it's sharp enough. If you're not happy, then ask for compairison. If you're still not happy and it's on par... gotta get some primes.

I shoot indoor sports all the time and never use a monopod or tripod.
crank2o, if you want a consumer zoom with good range, the 28-135 is better. If you want a mostly professional lens that's sharper and wider aperture, the 28-75 is probably better.
