Anyone know how much a good filter costs? I've always been amazed at this technique.

Well, here is my first attempt at using the Hoya R72 on a Nikon D70s. Not the greatest, and much more room for improvement, but I was hoping to get some pointers from anyone out there on this subject.

Here is my second attempt with the new filter. Not exactly much better, especially with the lens flare, but I guess I'm worrying about other stuff beside that rigth now.

I shoot them in RAW, throw one through the ACR (have a setting saved for it now) then adjust the Calibrate to
Shadow Tint-0, Red Hue +100 Saturation -100, Green Hue +100 Saturation -100, Blue Hue +100 Saturation -50
this will make it a B&W image, then you can mess with the other tabs, adjustments to what you like and then save it (the little arrow pointin gto the Right)
After saved you can run them all through. or cont one at a time if you want color in it, ie: mess around with the color Calirate stuff again.

Here is another attempt with the Sony Camera. Played with the colors a bit for different effects. I'd love to hear all critique/comments good and bad. That is the only way for me to learn.
Thanks!

I just got my IR72 today. I'm at work now and can't wait to go home and use it. :-)
I just noticed that the filter is completely black and holding it up I can't see anything through it. I don't have my camera with me now so I am wondering ...
How do you focus through this filter if you can't see through it? Any sugessions !!

I focus before putting the filter on, then adjust some for IR (as indicated earlier in this thread by Kirbic). What little you might see through the viewfinder and filter isn't enough to accurately focus. |

Damn... so basically is this sort of photography (especially with this filter) only a guess game?? Any more comments on this as a lot of you have this filter and have produced some wonderful images.

bumping for sugessions on this as I really can't see anything through the filter. Moreover the images are not even any close to some posted in the thread. Even with a 15 sec shot I can barely see anything in the picture.
Did I just waste £23

You should be getting something at 15 seconds. Bright sunshine helps. This was 8 seconds at F9, iso 200.

I guess sunshine is the problem. I was taking them on a rainy and an overcast day with low light... Thanks for the tip. Will try again on a sunny day.

Here`s a couple i took a week or so back and just got round to playing with. With this camera i post process most of the photos with the same steps. Which are:
Swap red/blue channels
Auto levels
minus 100% yellow saturation
plus about 40% overall saturation
neatimage with 70% sharpening
plus about 20-30% overall saturation
levels to add contrast
Unsharp mask
Here are the originals and processed. Most of this will only work well with olympus c2100 or c2020 cameras. Hope this helps some of you olympus users.
May have over-cooked the blue in this one :)

Two more photos here now. I think they are improving a little bit, but they still don't look anywhere near as good as marbo's.

Some questions:
1. What is "Neat Image"? How effective is it? How easy to use? Where do you get it?
2. Any Nikon users shooting IR that could offer a bit of advice?

Scott,
Neat image is a free noise reduction program that works wonders with infrared photos (and others of course). You have to be careful, but when used properly it makes all the difference. You can get it at www.neatimage.com and it comes with a tutorial to get you started. Good luck and let me know if you have any problems.

Laura, thanks for the information. I'll download it tomorrow at work and start playing around with it to figure out the settings.

I'm still having major focus/noise issues with all my shots. Thought my filter might be dusty (?) and realized something I didn't notice before.... Sounds like everyone else has a Hoya R72 filter but mine is a Hoya RM90!?!?! I've done some quick yahoo searches and can't find what's the main difference is between the two. Anybody know? |

I love IR no matter how frustrating it can get, I always love the results

Here's a small collection of my IR pictures, all taken with a Nikon CP950.
I find that if I use the flash I can get the shutter speed to around 1/60 so it's great for handheld pictures. I also push the Ev to +2.
I`m using a Cokin 89b which is the same as a Hoya 72.
