I think people a) feel bad about dashing everyones hopes b) don't want to jinx themselves or be perceived as braggers.

I think the main purpose of these threads is reassurance for the people with mediocre scores that they aren't alone in their pain.

LOL :)
Yes. I'm at 5-something. Mediocre people unite? We take up pitchforks and burn something.

{Just kidding, Heida}

actually i started the thread because i was shocked my photo taken at 11:50some was doing so well and was enjoying watching the rollarcoaster ride.

I am willing to wager the ribbons never post in these threads because they are too busy taken better photos than those of us hooked on the forums :p

which futher begs the question of how many of the ribbon winners comment and/or vote on entrys.

actually I just had a look at all the ribbon winner profiles on the front page and all of them have left a lot of comments so I take my previous message back.

Looking at the scores though it really though. Based on what I have seen around the 4's seems avg. 5's good, 6's excellent 7's outstanding anything higher and your a god.

I think if you asked most of them, (and this has been discussed many times in various threads) they would tell you what helped them to get to that level was many hours of studying and commenting on other photos, good and bad. I know this has been a huge tool in helping my learning curve :-)

I have been making a solid effort to comment on as many of the pictures as I can in this challenge. So far I have hit the ones that I have voted low and plan on getting to most of the 5's too.

I would prefer to be out taking photos. But I'm stuck at the computer 8 hours daily (at least), so I can have the forum page open, and keep a watch on my score. :D

Since I'm new here, and this is my 1st challenge, I have a question...

Is it normal to rarely get a useful comment?

The 7 comments I have, basically tell me nothing. "W00T!" How is that supposed to help me understand my lousy score? I tried to give some sort of relevant comment on anything under a 6. "XXX is distracting", "Fill-Flash might have helped", "Would be cool as B&W", etc... The ones I rated > 6, I was assuming you know much more than I do, and I have no business telling you what to do.

If my picture is below-average, it would sure help to know why.

Good luck all.

There's been a lot of noice (grain :) ) about titles in this challenge. So I have a hypothetical question.

If your photo did not have the year as the title ... would you prefer a score of 2, 3 or 4 with no comment because it didn't meet the challenge. Or would you prefer a 2, 3, or 4 with a comment indicating that it didn't meet the challenge.

I still think we ought to be voting the photo, not the title, but there's the little voting guideline about "relevant to the theme" which is bothering folks.

Don't start the ANAL RETENTIVES again

Vote on the photographic skill of the photog, not his/her ability to come up with a title. This is a PHOTOGRAPHY site.

well with some photos, you don't see any relavance without the title, but if you look at the title, you see what the photo means to the challenge~! to me, the title is a part of my voting, a very insignificant part, but a part none the less~!

hey Falc, how about you lay off calling people names
Everyone is entitled to vote how he or she wants to, and can talk about it if they choose without having to be called anal by you. Cheers.

Maybe DPC should just get rid of Titles all together. That way votes won't be based upon how creative one is or is not with words.

We need titles as links to the picture on our profiles. I like making titles anyways, sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. people need to chill out.

That's not the answer either. Vote from your heart - vote on the merits of the image before you. If your heart says 1, then vote 1. If your heart says 10 - then vote 10.

My first entry into a contest since signing up - hell, I'm just happy my photo was voted on! The critiques have been most helpful and I appreciate them :-) I'm enjoying this site immensely and just looking to improve my skills.

I´m happy with my 5.0876. I have got few comments good ones but one told me that the cars on the picture was not that old. I lokked at the picture and (lol) I did send wrong photo I took 2 because new car came in my picture while I waited for the MLU so I took another. I posted wrong one did not notice when working on it.

i read in some peoples posts that they think its only the photo and the ability of the photography that should be taken into accound when voting... i don't agree with this.. i mean, someone could submit a fantastic photo, excellent composition etc... yet it has nothing to do with the theme at all... in this case i would give it a low score... all the photographers ability was lost in the fact that he/she didn't take notice of what they were challenged to do.... so to me, yes we need titles and yes the photo should fit the theme...

put it this way, say you hire a photographer to do wedding photos... well, thats there challenge theme isn;t it, the wedding... yet they decide to take some amazing photos of some firefighters at work instead... they may be great photos but it wasn't what he/she was supposed to do,,, lol , i hope folk see where i'm coming from on this.....

im a bit shocked with how people are interpreting what they think 'meets the challenge' , gee i would've really thought anything could, it's the photographers imagination of his/her idea for a time capsule for future generations...

must admit roadrunner, thats a good point...
