I'm submitting two images to the NYS Fair. They can be any size but must be mounted or matted on 16x20 board. I've chosen 11x14 for the lighthouse as it will be a good dimension against the 16x20. For the NYC bridges I chose a length of 14" and height of about 6" but to be printed on 11x14".

Which crop do you like best for the lighthouse? There's only a slight difference but I think it does change the look.

Crop 1

Crop 2

Crop 3

This is what the original, uncropped version looks like:

Here's the NYC bridges.

Thoughts? I'm having them printed tomorrow so any replies are appreciated.

Thanks!

- Jen

I don't like either of the crops...how about some open space on the left, and force the stack more to the right? Sort of take it to 8x10 format but just crop from the right side?

Thanks deapee.

How about crop 3? It's still 11x14...but practically the same as the 8x10 dimensions I tried.

Does that mean you don't like any of the pics or any of the crops? :-)

Thanks shutterbugKD!

Hate to be a dissenter, but I like 2 the best. All great, though. I love the clouds!

I like crop #3 the best.

I too prefer crop #3!

I'll wait for a few more replies before deciding. I don't know which I'll pick yet. I personally like crop 2.

Just curious what you all like about crop 3? I'm not saying I hate it but it feels heavy on the right to me, like the weight isn't balanced. Anyone care to explain why you prefer it? :-)

Thank you!

Hey! I like the shot.. was referring to the cropping :p

It's more visually appealing...easier to look at. It puts me at ease and I just feel better focusing off to the side...which is why I suggested it.

Take your mouse and locate the center of the photo...now drop it down a little (the eye tends to like this area) -- and that area that your mouse is now in is just about the path between the windows and the most prominent point of the lighthouse.

I also like crop 3. I thought it would be #2, but when I saw #3 and then went back to #2, 2 seemed too centered and not as interesting. The more I looked at 3 the better I liked it.

I don't like to crop images... so i'd say keep it uncropped.

Thank you for the explanation. I understand what you are saying.

I agree, I hate cropping. I try hard to compose in-camera. To get an 11x14" (what the camera shop said would look really nice on a 16x20 board) I would have to crop.

I could however essentially get an uncropped image if I resize to 14x9.333"...which shouldn't be too bad. Give me a sec to do that...

Okay, tried that, and I like it! How's this?

Crop 3 here, and a very nice image also.

I too don't like to crop, but the uncropped version is almost too centered also. Whereas crop 3 makes is a bit more off-center, and seems to make better use of the rule of thirds.

3 for me...nicely balanced

edit extra thought:

Not sure I understand Kyebosh's hatred of cropping...aside from lost pixels, I can't see how cropping can do anything but help a shot....

....is it a photographic honour kind of thing?
