I have seen that some have copyright on there pictures on DPCPrints. Do they go out and get a actual copyright or do they just put copyright on there images because the pictures are theirs and that gives them the right. Please let me know. Thanks

I'm not a lawyer, but my understanding of copyright is that any piece of intellectual property (including a photograph) is copyrighted to the owner/creator as soon as it is put in tangible form. The attachment of a copyright notice means nothing, other than to serve notice to people who might think about using somebody else's property.

Just put them on without the paperwork in 99% of the cases. I believe the copyright gives you some protection but if it's really something you want protected you should pay to get an official copyright on it. That's my understanding anyway.

That notice forms the basis of your claim of willful infringement.

You own it as soon as it's in "tangible form" including burning to a CD. If you do not register a work with the U.S. Copyright Office there are some limitations on any damages you can collect, but you do not waive any of your rights by not registering. Putting a copyright notice on any "published" copies is a good idea.

Virtually all the instructions and forms you need are available for download as PDF (Acrobat) forms from the link above. For more legal books and stuff, check out Nolo Press.

Thanks, I don't have anything that I feel would need a paid copyright, but was wondering about just putting one on my prints just to give me a little protection.
