Trying to trigger 2 580ex's with second curtain off camera. The only way we can think to set up an off camera 2nd curtain shot is with a sync cord to one and an optical slave on the other. Is there an easier way to achieve the same effect? Is there a way to do second curtain without a sync cord? |

Canon ST-E2 STE2 IR Transmitter
This allows you to place your flash units off camera

Am I missing something......As far as I know..the 580ex WILL NOT do second curtain in slave mode... If you use the wireless transmitter the off camera flashes have to be in slave mode. |

I don't think the 580EX in slave mode cares about 1st or 2nd curtain--AFIK, the slave doesn't know the exposure time nor does it know when the shutter opens. It just fires when it sees the master flash fire. (there is a pre-flash to meter things also). So if the master is in 1st curtain sync, the slave will fire immediatly after the master fires. If the master is in second curtain sync, the slave will fire immediatly after the master fires. |

There is NO master. Currently, both flashes are off camera being triggered by the wireless transmitter, which fires both flashes at the begining of the exposure. However, this will not produce the effect that I want with a second curtain flash. Thats why I'm asking, is there a way to trigger the OFF camera flashes in second curtain mode. I know it can be done with a sync cord and the camera set to second curtain but I'm trying to find out if there is another way to produce this effect without a sync cord and optical slave. |

Ok, doesn't the trasnmitter act as a "flash"? It just won't fire a thing, besides the signal for the other flash units!
If u set the camera custom function to fire 2nd curtain, won't the signal sent by the wireless thing, make the flash units fire at the second curtain!? Just like if it was on-camera!?
I don't know it, cz I don't own the transmitter (but am going to buy it), but I think it'll work like that.
Give it a try |

No..Even if you have the camera set at second curtain with the transmitter on the camera, the flashes still fire at first curtain. |

Can you just set your camera to rear curtain sync mode, in commander mode, set your 580 ex's in slave mode and fire? man Nikon makes this stuff too easy I guess.
