I got a gift certificate to B&H Photo for my birthday...and although it won't cover the full cost of a new lens, I'd like to put it towards one. Can someone recommend a good lens for my new Nikon D70?
I love photographing Concerts & Portraits (mostly childen)...I would love a slight telephoto because I like being further away from my subject so that I'm not noticed as much!! I just don't even know where to start...any reco is appreciated!!
Thanks

I've heard good things about this lens - Nikon Normal AF Nikkor 50mm f/1.8D and at about $100 it's pretty darn affordable. It will probably be my next lens. It's not telephoto, but with the 1.5 crop factor with the D70, it'll be about the equivalent of a 70mm which is supposed to be a good focal length for portraits (or at least that's what I've heard). And the 1.8 would probably help with concerts.

Wow, that's pretty general. Slight telephoto with no specified dollar amounts. For shooting concerts so it should be a low light fast lens. Well in that case there is only one lens to get.
Nikon's best portrait lens.

Sigma 70-200mm f2.8 has got to be the one IMO. |

Not for indoor concerts. It's too big and too slow.

Sorry- the gift certificate is for $100, but as I said, I am willing to pay more!!
The concerts I shoot are mainly indoors, very low light. I forgot to mention the lenses that I already have: they include a 50mm 1.8; and the standard 80mm (3.5 maybe?)
I'd love one 70-200mm f2.8- that's got to be a good lens huh? |

I don't know about the speed but I don't think it would be to big. I use a 50-200mm f/2.8 on my E-1 and it is 100-400 35mm equiv and i don't find it to big at all. As a matter of fact it seems to be just right. I is the lens I use for both out and indoors concerts. Sometimes I use the 300mm outdoors though. Depends how far I am away from the action.

this sounds like the perfect lens for what you're looking for.
I have the 70-200 2.8 VR, great lens! For what you described your looking for sounds like nsbca7 has the best advice tho

Just quoted the price on B&H...a little steep for me at the moment! I can put more money against the gift certificate, but only up to about $300-$400 total!

I'd use a combination of 50mm and 70-200mm then I'd get a 12-24mm, but then we all have different styles. |
