I went to the unveiling of a mural in our downtown area today, it was a big media event. For the sake of experience, I did my best to shoot in a "media" kinda way, without getting in the way of the official event shooters. I'd like to use one or two of these on my public site (part of my portfolio, I suppose), but I'm not sure any of them are good enough. I like the 3rd from the bottom, but I don't know about any of the others. I could use a second (or 30th) opinion. Thanks!

By the way, there are a few after event photos (that I won't be sharing with any of the bigwigs) here:

They all seem pretty good to me! Especially the ones with people close-up, say, "Discussing the unveiling" for example. "The mayor and Cheryl LaBerge, Downtown Manager." is a very good one too.

Thanks jansku-- those are the ones I like as well. Any other thoughts?

I'll post my thoughts as this is something I've been studying over the past few months and I'll be going to school for photojournalism in the spring.

Most of your shots wouldn't work very well as they don't really tell a great story, but there are some very good 'almosts'!

The ones of the artists signing are great but there are either people in the way or in the one case which is the clearest shot of this situation there is nobody else around so it looks like there was no crowd! Perhaps that perspective, but a little tighter to get only the wall and artists would have worked on the one that's captioned "John Aretakis and Rudy Hyde add the finishing touches".

I suggest that you take a look at this great blog entry from Mark Hancock about 'getting the photo'...it will greatly help you analyze this set of shots.

I think you've done a really good job and an average editor would have found something to run...but you didn't get the whole story in one photo which is the ultimate challenge.

The story was about the mural (and it's unveiling), the community, the politicians and the artists...you got them all but in several different pictures...try tying them together a little bit more and you've got an A-1!

Thanks for that. Exactly the kind of critique I am looking for.

By the way, I should mention you had a difficult assignment...it looks like there were other press in the way at times, the sun was in the completely wrong spot and the mural is gigantic!

I think the ones of the artist writing '2005' is very close to being a winner but the key is to shoot 'tight and bright' (thanks to Tom Braid for that advice).

Great advice from thatcloud! I can't add anything of value except maybe to say don't use this picture:

Looks like the back of his head exploded! LOL

Nice job on the mural and artists photos, Andi!

Well, as I mentioned, I was only there for the experience, so I did my best *not* to get in the way of the official photog for the airline, the photog for the local paper, or the cameramen from the local TVs! So I could have mashed my way in for a tighter shot but I'm sure they'd have been supremely pissed ;)

The mural was actually across the RR tracks from where the tent & stage were- I thought it was weird that only the media and the artists crossed the tracks for the signing- the politicians stayed on stage, thanked everyone for coming, and told the public, basically, we're done! Then the bigwigs came over when everyone left to have their photos taken. I guess that's how things work in small towns. ;)

And yes, it's tough to get a 160 foot long mural in short artfully!
