The whole trouble here is common sense. Some towns have so little to do that they have to make up a story. Some have so much to do that they ignore obvious signs of neglect and abuse. There's so much red tape to protect the innocent (the child, in most cases) that the parent has to suffer.

These days, fewer and fewer people have enough common sense. Without it, how are we to decide what is abuse and what is love? Take the challenges here - almost everyone can come up with a slightly different definition for a new challenge. Without common sense to sort through the possibilities and come to the most reasonable conclusion, we're all lost.

Think about the people who have to make these decisions - if they don't react quickly enough (i.e., take the child away) and the parent IS guilty, who's responsible? They are. If they react too quickly and the parent is innocent, who's responsible? They are. It's a horrible situation to be in. "You're damned if you do, and damned if you don't."

Some things turn out right, and some don't. In the end, everyone just does the best they can.
