I have been looking to get a flash for my Camera. I have the Konica-Minolta Z3, and it states that it will work with any of the Maxxuum Flashes, or with a slave flash. I was thinking about getting a slave flash before I got a hot show flash, because right now my Z3 is in the shop and I am using my Fujifilm 2800 Zoom P&S camera, which does not have a hot shoe. My question is will a slave flash work with my Fuji camera? What is a good brand or are they pretty well equal? I saw one on ebay for $55.00 with a guide number of 92. It is a phoenix brand. Is that a good deal or do I need something more.
Also can you run more than one slave. I am learning and don't really know why I would need more than one, but it was a question I wondered about. Thanks

depends what kind of slaves you are dealing with, seems like you mean optical (light) slaves.
a GN of 92 is ok, not that great.
The best flashes for the money are the vivitar 285's (GN of 120) and they can be had new for like 85.00 or used for a lot less on ebay. Then buy a wein peanut slave for the 285, which is like 20$. It plugs right into the flash.
You have to realize working with optical slaves, it is hard to get your flashes to fire in daylight, if you would ever need to. If you are working indoors you should have no problem. |

The Vivitar is it a hot shoe flash that you can make a slave with this wein peanut you talk about? I believe I am talking about a light slave. It states that it fires when it sense the flash from your camera.
Once I get my Z3 back and I get a Hot Shoe Flash for it. Will the slave flash be adequate for a side light or will it be overwelmed by the flash from the hot show flash?
I have no knowledge at all about external flashes and am trying to learn. Thanks for the advice!

the vivitar is a hot shoe flash that can be converted to a slave yes. I have 3 of them and use them for all different purposes, on camera or off.
If you are worried about overpowering the main flash from the camera with your slave flash, it all depends on what power your slave flash, and main flash are firing at. With digital you can see the effects right away which is good.
If you did have a problem with your slave flash overpowering your on camera flash you could do a few things - turn down the power of the slave flash, move it further away from the subject, or bounce it so that the light is spread out and softer. It's fun to play with.
The same goes with your hot shoe flash, you can bounce it or power it down if it is overpowering the slave flash.
Usually you would want your slave flash to be stronger, as on camera flash just doesn't look so hot most of the time.
hope that helps.

Slave flashes: optical fire when they see another flash, infrared use infrared as the triggering method and radio (need a hot shoe or PC cable socket in the camera for these).
The optical slaves will fire when they see another flash - so if you camera fires a pre-flash (fujis do not, not sure about your minolta) the slave will fire with the preflash and not recycle (recharge) in time for the main flash (as in it won't work)
Some hot shoe flashes come equipped to work as optical slaves, some do not. The wein peanut (or generaic equaivalents) work well.
Some hot shoe flashes come with auto thyristors, TTL, simple power adjsutments or just full blast every time.

Thanks to all the replied. I plan on purchasing a slave first off, because of the fact that my Z3 is in the shop and my p&s doesn't have a hot shoe. Wish me luck.
Hopefully when I get this I can start adding some depth to my shots with some side light, instead of the deer in the headlight look I get with my onboard flash.
