About a week ago I took another plunge(uh oh...I'm getting used to this) and spent the money on the tokina 12-24 f4. I haven't had the chance to shoot too much but today I have finally come up with a couple of pics for you guys to see. So far I'm pretty happy with it. It will distort ever so slightly in the corners at 12mm but with carefull composition it is unnoticable. The only pics here that have any problems is the one of the pillars. In the top edges there is some ghosting along strong points of contrast(I don't know the technical name). It does vingnette with a circular polarizer stacked on top of a uv filter when less than 15mm. I'm having fun and I hope ya'll like the pics. So what do ya think? All comments are very much appreciated.

Hey Congrats. The "Toke" does vingette at 12mm with a regular thickness CPL filter. I would not recommend stacking filters as that degrades image quality and more likely causes more vingetting. If you want to eliminate vingetting, a thin CPL would do, as Tokina recommends. However, I only get it at 12mm with my cpl filter. Also there is quite a bit or barrel distortion at 12mm. In terms of optical performance, the toke is worst at 12mm and much better at 18 -24. Using f4 causes a bit of CA but "squinting down" (a term I'm using to using higher value aperatures) to about 5.6 and higher seems to make a lot of differnce. Squinting down even more won't do too much more, it's diminishing returns after f5.6.
Good luck with your new toke, it's a fun lens.

Thanks for posting Tom. Does anyone know if the thin polarizer would still be free from vingnetting stacked on top of the UV? It would be quite a hassle to have to take off my UV filter every time I wanted to shoot with a polarizer. |

Never thought of that, just to be safe, I always take my UV off before puttin my cir. polarizer on, just a habbit.

Same here. I don't find it a hassle. Replacing an expensive lens because of scratched glass is a hassle.

This is kind of backwards thinking. If convenience is what you want, get a P&S cam, right? Stacking filters is always a bad idea, even absent the possibility of vignetting. The mre glass/air interfaces you put between subject and sensor, the more possibility there is of image degardation, particularly from loss of contrast via ghost-type flare that you can't really see.

Well, I guess I won't be stacking filters anymore :) |
