What's the best all around lens/zoom at a reasonable price?

I don't like my 18-70mm kit lens, which is my present all arounder. I probably have never taken a picture at 18mm so that angle can go.

Tokina, Sigma, Tamron are ok if the quality far exceeds what I have and the cost isn't painful.

Tamron Zoom Wide Angle-Telephoto AF 28-75mm f/2.8

Didn't find any reviews on this one.

The Tamron SP AF 28-75mm f/2.8 XR Di is a great all-around lens. It can be found for less than $350.

Tokina 24-200mm stays on my camera most of the time. You can use it on your 35mm as well.

Steve,

Not sure why you are dissatisfied with the 18-70 kit lens. Reviews are quite positive and it has good showing in many images. Is the range too limited for you or is it the quality of the results. Instead of getting the 18-70 kit lens, I opted for the Nikkor 17-35 f/2.8 and a Sigma 50-500 Ex. I also picked up a Nikkor 24-85 f/2.8-4 and had a 50 1.4 and a 1.8

With the sensor size impact on standard lenses, you will need at least an 18mm on the wide end and some fotogs think that a Nikkor 12-24 would be the starting point.

If your dis-satisfaction is due to image quality, then I might suggest you try and determine what about the image results is bothersome. If it is image blurr, then either a more stable platform (ie. tripod) or faster shutter speed might solve the concern.

Wishing you the best with your lens pursuit.

It could be sharper and I take far better photo's with my Sigma 105mm Macro, Nikkor 70-300mm and my 50mm 1.8....so I assume it's not me. Maybe it is me but it just doesn't take shots that appeal to me.

I don't really need 18mm(I never shoot that wide)and I'd like to go to at least 70mm to leave no gap to the 70-300mm.

It might be that particular lens. You might try another 18-70 lens on your camera in a camera shop, then review the images on your computer for a comparison. I would think that a local shop would let you shoot a couple of frames inside their store, for your assessment.

Good luck.
