I'm not sure myself. Got a similar picture of a raptor the other day. Thought it might be a falcon.

Heres another picture. Think it is a young Redtailed Hawk.

A lot of distinctive markings on the back and head of some birds. Do you have any images from the back of the bird?

I don't. He flew off right as I took that last shot. If I had a DSLR I would have seen him take off. As it was I saw him 10 to 15 feet from the tree moving in between other trees and in a second or two gone in the wood. He looked at me the whole time he was perched. I got about 5 pictures but he never turned totally away.

Looks very much like a red-tailed hawk. These being very common and widespread, I'd go with that absent any more specific identication from a real expert.

Robt thats what I was thinking. It was so small I at first thought it might be a falcon then I had a look online at some Falcons and realized it was doubtfully. Heres another one. A beautiful bird.

I'm even more sure with that shot. Compare:

Get rid of everything in the URL ahead of the "pbase.com" part ... I think it's trying to be routed through a temporary pathway right now

That is not a Red Tailed Hawk. It is a Broad-winged Hawk.

I got it! Just cut and pasted 'red tail-harrik' or some such and went right to the picture. Very nice one indeed. Yes I think it is definitely the same bird. Thanks General and Robt.

It's not the same bird. The bird in the first image is a Broad-winged Hawk, not a Red tailed Hawk. A Red Tailed hawk has a red tail. Also the patterns on the breast are much different.

I also think nsbca7 is right and Broad Winged has it. Nice captures PhotoRyno. I think we both got the same type of hawk and is sort of funny you started this thread when I was wondering what exactly I had just taken a picture of the day before. Thanks, now I can be somewhat assured it was a Broad Winged Hawk.
