I was curious how many DP users are also members of shutterstock.com. I just signed up and uploaded the required 10 images to start an account. Has anyone made money with shutterstock? If so, how many images do you currently have uploaded? Is the service credible? Thanks in advance. |

It's credible - I've gotten paid twice now and made just under $250. LOVE it! :)

I got me some money also. There are bazillions of dpc members on Shutterstock. Approximately. |

Mavrik and mk...how many pictures do you have uploaded to shutterstock? I'm trying to figure out what the odds of actually making any money are. |

I have about 70 but most of my sales come from about 10 of them. And they aren't very good, either.
These are two of my top sellers.

Save your time...and build up a real portfolio and don't sell your images for pennies -- you'll be happier in the long-run. Remember, once your photo sells for $.20, it's not worth anything more than that.

I started in January and have about 250 photos up so far and have made $384... I have recieved three checks from them, never had a problem, and am expecting my fourth at the end of this month.

It's better than having your photos sitting on your computer unused. If you've got photos that you think can sell for big money, don't submit those. But the microstock places are a good place to learn what you can and can't sell. Some people are making pretty good money there.

at whose expense?
There's one person at these microstock sites getting paid -- and that's the owners.

Do people care about this? I'm not out for Gary Fong to sell his stock for $150 a use. I'm out for Matt to get maximum income each year.

Why wouldn't people care? At some point, some of the photographers here are going to venture out and begin making some real money through photography -- albeit creatively or through stock or through some other means, and it just makes things that much harder to break into. Not that competition is a bad thing, but like I said...you're only hurting your own future, if nothing else, you should be concerned about devaluing your own portfolio and your own worth.

What's "real" money? My photography related income this year is higher than that of my 32 hour a week "real" job. I'm making money taking photos - this is more money. I like that. How many great talented dpc photogs are on Alamy? How much have they made? How many of us on Shutterstock? How much have we made?

Are you arguing with me, or yourself? You seem to try to argue a new point each time you post. Like I said in the beginning...

Um, I'd bet my dollars to your donuts that the Shutterstock crew has more money this year than the Alamy crew. I don't think that's changing my position. I think microstock is great for me.

You can actually sell the same images on both Shutterstock and Alamy if that makes anyone feel better.

You're comparing the amount of money a basically amateur group of photographers has made at a microstock site, and the amount that same group has made at a professional stock site...it's apples to oranges.
I'll bet there is a much greater possibility of someone who has some skill saving their images and creating a strong portfolio and making a living off of alamy or other pro stock sites than them ever making a living on shitterstock.

DP, I'm not going to argue this for 3 hours - there are 100s of threads on the same topic. But basically, micro stock sites make you a better stock photographer AND build your folio. There's nothing that says these "amateurs" can't practice on Shutterstock and then drop their folio and start submitting other stuff to Alamy once they get better, either. The point is, this stuff has bought lenses, cameras and other gear for people - myself included.

That's fine and I agree...with which point of mine are you arguing? Like I said...save your images and build a strong portfolio, you will be happier in the long-run. *sigh*
