Hi. I just got this message:

I saw your photo entitled "Fishing the Reeds" on Flickr and would like your permission to use it on a Web site. Would you allow me use it?

I'd like to let her use it, but I don't really know how to reply. I don't want to give up any rights and I'd like to ask for a nominal amount of money but I'm afraid that will scare her away.

I'm flattered, and I'd love to see something I made being used on a commercial web site, so I'd like to handle this carefully.

Any suggestions?

did you shoot the picture with profit in mind? if so, charge money. If not, be happy that you got recognized. It's wonderful news, congratulations. Which website?

Thanks!

Don't know which website. She mentioned the company name, but I thought it wouldn't be nice to mention. When googling for the co, I couldn't find a specific site, but it seemed to be mentioned a lot.

Here's my dilemma. If it's just being used for a website, I don't mind if they use it. But, I'd like to be credited in some way. The shot as it is doesn't have any name or copyright embedded in it.

If they plan to use it in print, I'd like some compensation.

I guess I should sign up with a stock site.

I'm planning to reply with something like this:

I'm interested. But, I have a few questions.

Can you tell me what/what site it will be used for? Is there any intention to use it for more than just a web site? Will I be credited? Is compensation out of the question?

Is that a good start? I haven't replied to her yet, and I don't want to wait too long.

If it's a company website I'd charge a fee (doesn't really have to be that much). Think about it like this; why should other people profit from your pictures but not you?

I'd ask for the website address and whether the picture would be used for commercial purposes. And also whether you'll get credit for the photograph and intended size.

ok, thanks. i just sent off something to that effect. didn't ask about the size though.

I've had a couple similar things come along. The first couple, I just asked for credit - which is nice. The next couple, well, I priced out a new memory card or attachment and asked for that much (usually ~$75 or so). I'm not getting rich, but it's fun to get a new toy "for free"!

Or you may as well write her back "HELL NO FLIPPIN WAY"

cuz you'll get the same result.

If it's a large company then they'll have the money to pay. If it's a small company then maybe don't charge. Either way, be sure they give you credit. Either ©BikeRacer or ©www.BikeRacer.com or something like that so people can search you by name/screen name/website.

One day a young photographer received an email requesting permission to use one of his photos on a website. The photographer was flattered and gladly agreed, happy about getting the notariety. His only condition was that the person send him a link to the site once the photo was in place.

The next day, the photographer received an email with the following URL:
//www.reallycrappyphotos.com

Doh!

Moral of this story: Make sure you know the site and the context the photo will be used in. :) LOL

@deapee & mavrik - lol, yes that would be the way to go!

@ButterflySis - thanks, that's a good idea. we'll see if i get a reply.

@kpriest - lol. thanks for the warning. i think it's a commercial website selling fishing gear. i assume they want(ed) my shot for a banner or something.
