I'm looking into buying an on camera flash for my Canon 300D. I was looking at the speedlites and thinking about the 550ex... but really it's a little bit more than i can comfortably afford.
I notice that there's other brands of flash that make fittings for canon eos cameras and these are invariably much cheaper, but i dont really know what i'm looking at.
What kind of things do i need to look for when buying a flash? Will I be screwing myself if i don't get a canon branded speedlite? Anyone have any recommendations for a good cheaper flash? Ideally I dont really want to spend over $200.
Thanks!

get a sigma DG 500 super!
just like a 550ex
Although I think you might want to consider buying the best you can afford! I have a 580ex and won't trade it for nuthing! |

Although there are many here that may argue with me I have been more than happy with my Canon 420ex. Even though I'd love a 550ex or 580ex, the 420ex has done me good service and given me good results! |

I would be worthless without my 550ex. I thought it was way too much when it was purchased, but it's more valuable to me than any other accessory I have. I almost *always* use the flash for fill/catch light, bouncing, strobing, blah blah blah. It's kept me from having to buy fast glass right away and I'm covered when I want to start using two flashes for semi-studio work.
