Got a Canon 2xII Extender yesterday and had to try it out. These pictures are all shot at 400mm (using Canon 70-200 2.8 IS 'L' lens). All of the pictures were taken within a few feet of each other in the backyard of my home.

Yup... all handheld. That's part of the reason I went with higher ISO speeds (400 and 800). Some of the pictures were as slow as 1/80th of a second ... totally breaking the 1/focal length guideline. The IS helped out a lot.

Very nice pics at 400mm. I just got a Canon 75-300mm IS and am not too happy with it so far. I know its on the low end of the lens food chain but some have had good success with it and others just find it very soft. So far I'm in the latter group.

I have the 75-300 IS and had some success. There is a sweet spot with the lens between f8 and f16. With these apertures you will get sharp images even at the extremes ( 75 and 300) though the sharpest will be between about 100 and 200.

The sweet spot is much broader on the higher quality lenses (probably the entire range - or pretty close).

edit: nice examples of what can be done with better glass

I was going to say that there's some softness in them but it's hard to tell whether it might be because of resizing, the adaptor or the slow shutter speeds.

Full zoom ?

These seem soft to me as well. It's hard to put it in context without side by side images from a prime 400mm. Here's pbase's database of shots from the older 400mm f5.6 prime.
