One of my cd's with about 300 family photos on it has decided not to work anymore! I'm recovering it but some are gone forever! I normally use good quality cd's but for this one I used a cheap no label brand. I think I have learnt my lesson! :(

Sorry to hear about that, especially with family photos. Ever thought about buying an external hard drive? I normally keep pictures on one of those and another copy on CD just in case. Sometimes that doesn't even cover you, but so far it has worked well for me.

It's a good idea! Too late now though so I'll just sit here and kick myself! *ouch*

I would try it on another PC or two or three - some CD-ROM drives are more sensitive than others.
May also try cleaning it - wipe from center outward in straight lines away from center - not in the curved shape that it is. A light coat of furniture polish and soft cloth can also help if the media surface is scratched.

I agree with rasdub - I keep all my photos on a second internal hard drive, an occasional backup on an external hard drive, and then on CDs once in a while. CDs aren't guaranteed to keep your pictures safe - it's too easy to scratch them or for them to decide to just be finicky.

Sorry to hear you lost your shots. :( I hope you can recover a lot of them!

I got 4 pc's here....tried in each drives....cd and dvd drives. No joy! Most seem to be recovering so I think I'm cool! I've got some cd cleaning solutions here but no joy....not a mark on the disk either (i'm pretty careful with them). Just a dodgy disk me thinks.

Are these problems that should show up if you have the burning s/w do a verify?

It's always good to do that, but the disk used to work but I haven't used it for awhile!

I have not heard of a CD going bad on a shelf. Makes me very very nervous.

Yes, the dyes can degrade over time. And with DVD-R, the data is only about one-fifth the size ...

It was a cheap disk though! I've never had a problem with my Verbatim or TDK disks!

I have a couple of DVD's (Pulp Fiction is one...my favourite movie) that has like a big darkish stain on it! Needless to say it doesn't play anymore!

ok - now this sounds funny - but there is a guy that runs a camera shop near my house that refuses to go digital as he claims he has heard of CD's going bad and images getting lost this way over time. I always figured he was just using that as an excuse to push his film processing business. Is it possible he actually knows something here?

Maybe??

Film degrades over time too, as does magnetic tape and every medium except maybe diamonds. But film has known characteristics which have undergone actual testing. There are no 100 year-old CDs to test, only ones which have been subjected to "accelerated aging tests" in an attempt to extrapolate a lifespan from that. They might be wrong.

Very valid point! So called 'simulated' testing I suppose can not beat the real thing.
