Anyone know of some good sites dedicated to commercial photography. Or what exactly is it? I'm assuming like doing a shoot for a shoe company or a restaurant or an architecture company.

Is that the same as 'assignment photography' in a sense? How do you get your name out there in the polls for those guys to see?

Thanks

you might want to google 'commercial photographers pittsburgh' and see what comes up.

as to what it is, well, not to be flip, commercial photography is photography related to 'commerce'. typically, these images are meant to be seen over and over again by many, many people (like in magazines, billboards, calendars, boxes, posters, menus, etc, etc, etc). this is unlike portrait/event/wedding photography, where the image typically has a limited audience and the print has a very limited production.

how do you get your name out there? put together a portfolio, and hit the bricks. cold call ad agencies and other businesses. read some books about commercial photography and selling.

you might get some ideas here, but something like this probably needs more in depth research than what you'll get in a forum.

good luck!

I recently purchased the "2005 Photographer's Market" it lists over 2,000 places to sell your photos including magazines, book publishers, stock agencies, greeting card companies, galleries and more! It list the name, contact person, email and the address of the company. It also tells you what they are looking for and how many photos they accept a year. It is a great book. It tells you everything you need to know to submit to these companies as well. Cost $24.99 in the US and $35.99 for Canada--You need to check it out!!

I worked in commercial photography for some time, usually it would be considered work done for ads, catalogs, annual reports etc.

Try looking in Photo District News for ideas.

Not yet. I am going through the book now to see which companies that need pictures I could actually take. I have business cards ordered, and I am working on a web photo ablum to showcase my style and give the company a look at what I can do. I am trying to prepare to submit photos first. I want to look like I know what I am doing before I send any. Oh and the book also tells you what the companies pay! I have about 200 picked out that I am going to try to shoot for.

Professional Photographers make photos for a living.

Commercial Photogreaphers are a subset of professional photographers, who do photography for "commerce". Typically they have ad agencies and designers as clients, and do not work directly for the end-user of the image. Obviously this isn't always the case; XYZ Industries, Inc. might hire a commercial photographer directly for any of a number of reasons.

Within the subset of "commercial photographers" you will find many who specialize in specific areas; product shots, architecture, food, whatever.
