Hi,
I have lurked here for a while and still feel a long way off being up to the standard of competing, however I would love any constructive criticism of my small portfolio.
I have just recently rekindled my interest in photography after buying a LUMIX FZ20 on the way out to my beach wedding/honeymoon 2 weeks ago!
You can see some of my pictures at Flickr until I get my online portfolio up and running...

Thanks in advance...

Patience James, you can't force comments here, that you will learn very quickly.
Now, as for you not being up to standard, rubbish, you have some great images there,I love the cat pics, what a poser :)
If I could make one observation, on my monitor one or two are a little dark and losing detail in the shadows. That could be my monitor, we'll see what others have to say.
Get in there and compete, you have a good eye and I look forward to you entering.
Regards and welcome,
Paul.

Thanks for the response Paul.
As for some being too dark, I fear that some of the photos are just underexposed. I have just switched from center weighted to spot metering and I will try to be more accurate with the light metering.
That said, my LCD just may not be calibrated.. despite folling several calibration processes I am still not convinced that I have got it right... and I am not sure that I can justify spending on one of those calibration gadgets.
Thanks again

I personally cannot use the LCD on my notebook for editing, that could be your problem in some cases. I much prefer my old CRT monitor even though it is well past it's sell by date.
The pics don't look too under-exposed, maybe the old trick of blending a dark image with a lighter version would help, sometimes pulls one back pretty well. Another option for the future would be bracketing and then blending, plenty of tutorials here and on the web for these processes.
Any other comments for James? come on guys give him a view.

"Heather Meadow" P1000835_EDIT3â has some beautiful colors. Iâm sure there would be many whoâd criticize the power lines but there is also a perspective that takes them into consideration in a sort of social commentary. I suppose that comes down to the photographerâs intent. That shot really is fantastic, though, with the colors and the fence. I loved the first shot of the cat; âFeed Meâ. Great contrast, texture, and lighting, and the angle worked well. The clouds in "Heavy Metal" P1000746_eDIT3_CROPâ are great, too. I wasnât so interested in the plow details, though. The clouds stole the show for me, but it I think the terrestrial components are important to the shot; perhaps the larger version is more inspiring. Overall, I think I could say something about each photo in your link, but I like the way you see things. Your choice of perspective and framing works. Without adding more comments, I also liked âP1000256â, âP1000187_bwâ (I canât decide between this or 192), "I Have Some Central Reservations", âwedding-003â, ok, well the list is getting long. I think you have an eye that, at the very least, fits very well with the things I find interesting. There were some other notables, too. Keep up the good work!

Very nice portfolio!! I love the cat shots, especially 'Feed Me'. With '1000 Yard Cat Stare' I think I'd like to see the cat looking into a little more space. Can't wait to see what you come up with for the challenges......have fun with them, and ;) keep shooting :))

You have some great pics! I think you'll do fine in the challenges. Also congrats on your wedding! I like the table pic and of course the cats are great.
