Got pointed to this today while listening to the Slacker Astronomy (alternate feed) podcast. It's a dumbed-down synopsis of Hawking's "Brief History of Time," which, as you know, is the book everybody wants everyone else to think they've read, but actually almost nobody has.
Anyway, this will help make you look smart at "those" kind of parties. (not really, but it's freaking hilarious)
Caution, the language is rough. Keep the kiddies away:

Well, most non-geeeks I know wouldn't touch that book with a ten-foot pole... and the socially-acceptable geeks I know would rarely admit they'd read it, certainly not in general company! I'm not afraid to admit I've read it, so I guess that leaves me out of "socially acceptable." ;-)
BTW, back from NM??

LOL!
That is hilarious. I book marked it to read in it's entirety at a later time. (Supposed to be working right now,)

I own it but confess that I've never read it. There are sooooo many books on the history of cosmology that are soooo much better written than BHOT. E.g., Ferris' "Coming of Age in the Milky Way."
Yes, back from NM. GREAT trip. Slowly going through ~1000 pics now... See my thread on the anti-crepuscular rays...

| I read it and enjoyed it so much I bought the 'A Brief History of Time Reader's Companion' about Hawking and how he came to be where and what he was. Unfortunately the companion book bored the crap out of me so I sold them as a job lot on ebay for £2.50 or so... |

Yeh, BHOT is really already a little watered down for general audiences...I do like Hawking's writing style though. I read it YEARS ago, don't een know where it is at the moment.
I'll have to look for the Ferris book, it does seem to be one of the better "accessible" cosmology books.
I can relate to the "wading through pics" feeling. I don't have 1k, only about 300 from Oshkosh last Saturday :-)
Edit:
I'm a super geek, super geek
I'm super geeky...
