I recently ordered a polorizing filter. I was wondering in what conditions should I use it an on what subjects.

Any ideas (links or photos) or examples appreciated.

well, anything that reflects. i use it alot for water and nature stuff. Just make sure you read up on how to use it. you have to be 90 degrees from your light. Ohh and also to, lose the polerized sunglasses or else you will see nothing.

On my recent New Mexico vacation, I made the mistake of using my circ. polarizer too much (on the camera almost all the time when I was shooting in bright daylight). Many of my photos were a little underexposed - which was my fault too since I tend to try to avoid blown highlights with an almost paranoid frenzy. In the future, I'll me much more careful about when I slap the CP on the lens.

Which is why shooting in RAW is so great. You can easily fix mistakes like this and get great pictures.

Fall colours will be enhanced by a polarizing filter though I also have a Tiffen Enhancing filter for this purpose.

Also, a polarizing filter will help with contrast. A good test to see if a polarizing filter will help a scene is to look at the scene through polarized sunglasses.

The August 2005 issue of Outdoor Photographer has an interesting article by Moose Peterson on when to use a polarizer. Definitely a different and interesting perspective. A good issue too (as they all are) if you are into landscapes: it's the Landscape Annual issue.

Moose (as in the Moose Polarizer Filters) basically says that the purpose is to control the reflection of blue sky from lots of things (not just water and glass), but trees, grass, and rock as well. In other words, without the polarizer used correctly, these reflect the cooler blue tones of the sky.

Read the article for a better explanation. ;)

I don't think this is true with circular polarizer. I will test however.

When I look through the viewfinder with both Circ. polarizer and my polarizing sunglasses on, I feel both partially blind and nauseous.

Take the sunglasses off!

Where was it stated to wear the sunglasses while looking through the viewfinder? Use some common sense people. ;o)
