Louddog, my point exactly. At the end of the day it all comes down to honesty, some companies are more honest than others. I do resent being taken for granted by all of them, it seems that canon are one of the worst of the bunch. RGO, the 50mm f1.8 is probably about the most honestly priced lense they produce, mainly because it is the simplest design, probably costs them a few dollars/pounds to produce but it does produce quality pictures. In the 21st century when companies use CAD to design lenses and use precision machinery to mass produce them there should be no such thing as a poor quality lense, Nikon have proved this with their kit lense and they are still making a healthy profit. I would also recommend the Cosina 100mm Macro, as it also produces pin sharp pictures even though it sounds like a cement mixer. I would be interested in hearing from other people who have found honest optics out there, maybe we can start a list/database and give the Canon's of the world a kick up the backside. |

"not only is it a good lens.... it's the best lens in the category, hands down. (that's why it's so expensive!)"
I don't think it is really any better than the Tamron, but that's beside the point. It is because of posts, and opinions, like that expressed in the above quote that Canon can get away with charging 3 times as much for a product whose superiority is very questionable to say the least.

Thanks guys for all the input. It has certainly been most helpful. I also appreciated the shift of focus onto L-pricing ethics.
When you figure out what we can do about it, email me...LOL

Coolhar, your realy looking at well over 5 to 16 times the cost depending on the lense. Also Canon build in redundancy into their products so that a second hand lense that works on the d-30 does not work on the 20-d. I am seriously looking at changing over to a Nikon setup as Canon have seriously got under my skin in a big way; if I had the cash I would set up my own manufacturing company and produce quality optics for a reasonable price and get rich in the process. |
