I just downloaded NewzCrawler for watching RSS Feeds and reading everything at once. So far I really like it - it makes everything so convenient for checking on some of my favorite photo blogs and other syndicated sites. Now if only all of my favorite photo bloggers had sites that provided RSS feeds (ahem: Pbase and other gallery-styled bloggers).

For those of you who don't know, RSS (Atom is another popular one) feeds are URLs that are updated every time a site is changed/updated. Yahoo, BBC and many other sites provide feeds to provide users with another way to keep in touch with their articles/stories/etc. For example (and as shameless self promotion), my RSS feed can be found here and here is my Atom feed. They're both viewable in your web browser, but all the code is really intended for providing information/format for RSS readers and the like.

You can read the updates from within NewzCrawler (I'm sure other readers are similar) and, if you so choose, visit the website. It makes it much easier for me to just be told when a site is updated rather than having to visit each one independently to check myself (maybe I'm too lazy..). Just thought some of you might be interested.

Good post. I ignored the RSS craze for a long time but recently decided to give it a shot and I love it. I use Bloglines for my reader because I can read from home and at work. It has a little tray icon that notifies me when there are updates. Newsgator is another popular reader. There are RSS Firefox and Thunderbird extensions for Mozilla users if you'd like to do it within your browser/email, plus a million other choices.

I know that flickr has an rss feed, as do blogspot, moveable type, etc.

I was under some sort of impression that Bloglines was a web-based RSS reader? Maybe I'm wrong, since you mention a tray icon? Just curious, since I know that is a popular one among the blog community.

I like NewzCrawler because I wanted a separate program for my RSS readings - and it also notifies me when there are updates to the feeds that I 'subscribe' to. In all fairness, it's the only one that I've tried - but I definitely like it so far. You can view the post within the reader, or double click on the post to bring it up in the web browser - very convenient for my needs.

Yes, it is web-based but there's a little program you download that will notify you when there are updates. Aside from being web-based (which is nice if you want to read your subscriptions from multiple places), it functions exactly the same way you describe NewzCrawler. There's also a little bookmark script you download and put in your toolbar and when you hit a site with a feed, you can click on the bookmark to add it to your subscriptions.

(I wasn't trying to discredit NewzCrawler...like you, this is the only one I've tried. I doubt there's a whole lot of difference between any of them.)
