I'd try isopropyl alcohol.

thanks! sorry to be such a smart ass but the three ribbon pics are quite horrible.......one must wonder what voters think about or rely on to judge pictures! |

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, I didn't enter or vote this one but would have voted all 3 ribbons quite highly.

I only gave three tens out in this challenge and Im happy to say that they were the ribbon winners which I think are all great works IMO.However my girlfriend didnt give any of them above a six so its a matter of taste.
Well done to the winners

As I said it is what one finds pleasing to your own personal taste, and technical merit, which I view very highly, maybe that is why I never win a ribbon LOL. Seriously, I feel they have come up with some pretty unique ideas and executed them very well.
My view entirely, obviously you feel differently, that is your perogative.
Paul.

Because they managed to present 'wood' in three creative, attractive and technically sound ways. The colors, mood, etc are great in each of them. Out of curiosity, what don't you like about them? Or which three would you have chosen?

When making a statement like that you should at least state WHY you feel that way and what made them so bad in your opinion. Personally I picked 2 of the 3 ribbons, and my 3rd came in 4th place. |

Why not? On what basis do YOU think they are horrible? Perhaps you like being an instigator? Guess it worked since you seem to be getting called out...

Not enough it seems........being an instigator..........these are challenges and when you vote, which many did, I am curious to know why they voted for these pics........many people post a very brief little marking rubric which is vague at best...... |

Gimmicky and familiar work.. that's what mass appeal is all about. I didn't much care for the ribbon winners myself, but I certainly admire the skill that went into creating them.. especially Joey's which was taken with a little low-megapixel P&S camera.. never fails to amaze me, but the subject itself isn't my cup of tea.
Sometimes we have to put personal biases aside for a little while.. never an easy thing to do. I got hit a bit on my wooden entry because the subject was one of the little mannequins or "Woodys" that everyone seems to love to hate.. yet it *still* pulled a 12th place, so obviously I did something that made a bunch of people put that bias aside.
We can complain all we want (and I do.. often), but in the end, the winners here will be whatever the winners are.. and if you want to join them, you'll just have to learn what wins and shoot it... or get darned lucky once in awhile :)

do you understand what you are saying.......that mass appeal should dictate personal vision! |

I'd reply with "Do you know what YOU are saying?"
You're implying that YOUR version of artistic value is superior to ours. That's a bit of an oxymoron: the average human being is going to judge based on either purely subjective appeal or technical excellence. While technical excellence can certainly be academically debated, there's only one type of person in the world who dictates that his own subjective preferences are the standard...
...and that would be a "dictator".

On *THIS* site, if you are more determined about winning ribbons than anything else, than yes.. mass appeal should dictate personal vision.. FOR THIS PURPOSE :)

yes of course.....but there are many and maybe better reasons.......this site is an infant and has yet to grow to maturity.....maybe it will..............most of all have fun develop some skills and always strive for freedom of expression.............it really is a cool idea for a site.......

'aboutimage' I could never be a dictator nor could I ever determine what another wishes to call good or nice or whatever........but, what makes art is something that moves beyond these boundaries and restrictions........'I like' and technical wizardry are not the basis of creativity.........or art....

Anything can have mass appeal and not be canned goods, at the same time.
Though I think it shows terrible form to critisize the winners of a Challenge I understand what you're trying to say and I agree that some DPC voters...enough anyway, seem to fall into a pre-fab mentality. Enough so, to effect the outcome of the Challenges. There are certain looks and techniques, that high votes seem to gravitate towards. Things don't ALWAY'S go that way, though. There's a wide enough variety of winning styles but technique of some sort, does need to be clearly present to get the votes. So whatever you do......show some technique DAMMMMIT!!!
Anyway.....who cares?

I agree...it is bad form........but sometimes somebody has to have a little 'bad form' to keep the water running clean.........technique is a handy thing....... you learn it all it.....and then ......to progress you must forget it all.........or you will be forever it's slave...........most of this is indeed 'tongue in cheek' but some is heart felt........I looked through some past challenges and I could not shake the feeling of continually seeing the same thing over and over again.............the idea of a challenge is to do just that...challenge............
