When I used to work with b&w film and would burn and dodge in the darkroom i would get great results, but not so now tih PS CS2. It seems that everything turns really flat if im burning or dodging a b&w and just turns grey if i do the same thing on a color photo. what gives and what am i doing wrong? which settings should i use? i used to tutorial on the site, but i get the same results. any sugestions?

I don't use the burn and dodge tools in photoshop because I got results like you described. This is my alternative approach:
1. Create a duplicate layer.
2. Use levels or curves adjustment to burn or dodge the entire layer.
3. Create a mask that hides the entire layer.
4. Make the mask tranparent where you want to burn the image.
I've found this give me a lot more control for burning and dodging. Plus, if you came from a darkroom environment where you thought of burning an area in terms of seconds (+6 seconds) this seem pretty natural. Make the entire duplicate layer +6 seconds and then use the mask to control where that exposure is applied.
