hello i went to drift yesturday i was trying to get a pic of this car all day so it comes in to the pit and i take this picture looked all good the screen but when i came home and put it on the computer it ws very dull as u can see below. I had it in sports mode due to high speed cars. But i am now thinking that i should of had it on Sand a shutter speed of around 400 not 2000. If i had it around the 400 mark would of it been alot brighter and clearer.

i also took this pic on the day on setting Ptook the photo and also very dull should of i had it on Sand a lower shutter speed if so would it be brighter and clearer.

I don't think the problem is in the shooting modes. The images you posted, don't look that bad. The reason for the dullness is, that you haven't processed them yet. Add some levels, saturation and maybe try various settings with the curves tool.

Oh, and as for camera settings. Did you shoot with JPEG or RAW?

try some post processing. I just did a quick demo on the silva shot (top one)

Just messed with the leves and saturation a little - digital shots will normally need some kind of processing to make the picture stand out, thats how they achive the nice prints in from film, its just done automatically for you then.

RAW gives you higher quality (no compression or with the D70 very low compression) and also gives you more processing options. You can correct things like the white balance afterwards if you got it wrong on the day.

I would try a nudge to the right on the contrast bar, and then maybe very slight to the left on the brightness bar. Other methods mentioned are great, if you know how to use them right (I don't yet).

Another tip is to get shots either earlier in the day or later in the day, its difficult to get contrasty shots during mid day because of the suns position, tends to wash things out

also too, use the manual mode and built in reflective meter. If your camera has a built in histogram that makes things a lot easier also.

The best technique overall though is to just keep trying. The more bad pictures you take the more good pictures you take.
