I'd call it a cable car, and the things in sanfran id call a tram.

The thing in the picture is probably best referred to as a tram (similar to a ski lift); any small car or container for carrying people can be called a gondola, including not only the boats of the Venetian canals, but also the small room or basket suspended from a balloon or blimp, to it could be considered one of the gondolas on that tram.

I disagree! In England trams are vehicles that travel on rails and are powered through overhead cable and travel along roads.

That transport is a cable car .

And in Australia a trolly is what you put your shopping in at the grocery store.

I feel sorry for the poor fella that started this post, were likely confusing the bejebus out of him.

LOL Since I was the first to answer this, I'll back up my response a bit. According to the Encarta dictionary: "gondola: 2.cable car: a car or cabin suspended from cables, especially one attached to a ski lift" So, yes, it is a type of cable car. However, at Killington Peak, one of the biggest ski areas in New England, which is nearby my home, they refer to them as gondolas, which is where I reference the term.
For the record, a gondola is also a boat in Venice...isn't English grand? :P

At most ski resorts they refer to them as "gondolas", so since the one in the picture lookes like it's at a ski resort, I'd go with gondola.

Exactly... a "Type of 'cable car'" so it is a cable car.. Unless the OP is refering to the actual car in which case, most of Europe would refer to it as a gondola yes ;) and yes, English is indeed grand.

No, no, people movers are those things at the airport...the flat escalators. :)

No, those are moving sidewalks.

I thought the people mover was the thing that looked like a train of golf carts. The gondolas were just gondolas. Does either of them still exist with the revamped tomorrowland?

in Nz its a gondola, in Japan it is a rope railway.

Pay no attention to all these idiots and morons (jejeje) confusing the issue. You can't go wrong if you call it a cable car. If you call it a gondola, most people (but not all) will understand, in the USA.

Robt.

A "gondola" is what you put your gravy in. "carts" are used to carry sick people into an "ambulance" or "helicopter", which incidentally can also be used to get to the top of the ski-mountain, or you can do a "helicopter" on the way back down. Here in australia, "people movers" are called "footpaths" or "buses", and we put our grocieries into "trolleys" which are pulled along by a "cable" under the floor, and get their "electricy" from overhead wires. The thing in the "photo" is called a "sasquatch".

Now, will everyone please stop being silly. :)

You have to go to the Yukon to see a sasquatch so I don't think that's one. Also, it has no fur (on the outside).
