I have been a second shooter for some time now. I use my 20D with a bracket ( i have a stroboframe VH 2000 and a stratos 835f) and the 580 flash. I always use an omni bounce on the flash. That canon cord is the right one...I use it too.
I generally shoot with my tamron 28-75 2.8 but used the canon 28-105 before i had that one.
The first shooter uses a second light plus strobes. I sometimes have a radio and share his strobes.
If you go for additional lighting the Alien bees are good and you then need to get a radio slave transmitter and receivers. I hear the pocket wizards are good but never tried them personally. Oh but one problem...the Rebel doesnt have a PC sync...not sure how you get around that.
i have also used my 420 flash as a slave off the 580 and mounted it on a light pole. You need an adapter for that, they can help you at b&h. You must watch the direction the eye is facing, it doesnt work if not facing the right way.

AlienBees sells a hot shoe adapter for $14.95 that will fix that problem.

I called and spoke with the owner in Fla before I purchased my bracket and he told me I didn't have to buy one of those but that it helped to keep the screw from eating away at the plastic thread on the bottom of the remote hotshoe mount. So far I've not had any trouble out of this. Just wanted to let you know.

Again, there are many ways to handle this situation. I'm just giving you may personaly favorite.

I have taken AlienBees to the venue and used them. For a pretty large group they are good but they can be overkill when you have a relatively small group who wants to get their photos taken in a hurry before the reception begins.

When's the wedding? If you bought everything that you guys were talking about you'll also need to put on about 50lbs of muscle beforehand to carry it all ;-)

Did you get the battery pack? I recommend Quantum over Canon. The cords are interchangeable so you can use the pack to power your camera, flash, etc.

Good luck!

I did not read the entire thread but if you purchased a flash with a second curtain flash such as the 580, use it and a slower shutter speed for the dancing at the reception. It really adds motion to the picture. The bride and groom that I did this for loved it.

I see the white is blown out..how would I have prevented that but yet make their faces bright at the same time?

The first 4 were taken with the canon 550ex flash and canon 28-200mm.

These were taken with my alein bees w/umbrellas on each side of the shot. with my sigma 28-70mm.
