When I click on a picture to view the new window opens in a small window and I have to maximize it every time. Where do I go in IE to set all windows to open up maximized as default? or can I?
My main IE icon under properties > Icons is set to run Maximized. But after I'm in IE all new windows are not maximized.

usually if you close out the picture box at the size you want it at, the next time it will load the same sized you closed the last one at. I guess that's not working?

IE remembers 2 window states: one is what it was last opened to, and other is the size it last opened another window to. The first is set when you close a window -- ie. IE will open to the size it was last closed at. The second (the one giving you grief) is set by closing a window opened by IE (such as if from 'open in new window') and then choosing File/Close from the menus.
This can be reset by any window (such as pop-up adds or flash windows) that dictates what size it is to be opened to. Close all windows that are opened to the wrong size first and this isn't a problem.

I just don't know how to reset it. Here is what happens, I hope I can explain it.
When I'm on DPChallenge for example and want to look at a picture someone posted in a forum I click it and it opens up a new window. It is 100% Horizontal but only about 20% vertical in size and at the top of the screen. I have tried dragging it to full screen and it works ok while in IE but when I exit IE completely the next time I open the same thing happens. I have also just clicked the maximize button and same thing happens.
Let me do a screen shot to show you.

Use firefox, and open in a new tab instead :-)

ok, if just using file/close did not save the settings (the red X does not, btw), here is a bit more to do:
Close all IE windows.
Open IE and Maximize it.
Choose, file/close.
Reopen IE -- it should open maximized.
If the window is off the screen in some direction, drag it back on and file/close again -- then reopen.
This takes care of IE opening maximized.
To take care of IE's secondary windows:
Click on the shortcut to open IE twice -- so there are two IE windows open at the same time.
In the second window opened, select a link and right-click to 'open in new window'. This window does not automatically maximize (as you've found out), so resize it by dragging the edges to the size and position you want (full screen).
Now comes the tricky part. :( Close the first window opened when clicking on the shortcut (it will be first on the task bar) by using File/Close. Then close the one just resized (the last one on the task bar) by holding down the Control key and clicking File/Close and do not release the Control key until the window is closed (not on the task bar anymore). Now close the last IE window -- it shouldn't matter how.
This should cause every IE window to open full screen, but if you are running an older version of Windows it may require a reboot after closing the last IE window.
Just using File/Close usually works as stated in my earlier post, but if not this should thump your preferences in a little harder. :)

Well I done everything you said and it still does the same thing. Even though I have XP-SP2 I still rebooted computer and still does it. Very annoying. However it does look like it cleared cookies or something because all folder in dpc forums are blue again (not gray) even the ones I looked at.
I guess I will have to try to reset IE to default and see if that works.

I've found that if I close my window maximized, the next time I open IE, it has forgotton and opens to the last window size I closed it at. That is, I now don't have IE maximized but I resized it by dragging until it fills the screen, then I close IE. This way it remembers the size, but doesn't open maximized. I dunno. IE is weird that way. Closing it maximized seems to forget what size to open it next time.

Your right, it didn't work for me anymore either. To get it to work I had to remove the registry entry Window_Placement, located at HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main. If you are not comfortable navigating the registry and manually deleting it, just copy the following text into a text document, name it 'restoreIE.reg' and execute it.
REGEDIT4
[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main]
"Window_Placement"=-
After removing that registry key the above worked like it was suppose to.
Now to set my IE windows back the way I like them. ;)

You may have to explain that a little better. How do you get to where you are talking about? I have this problem on my PC too, and none of the above cures work. I have not tried this one because I haven't a clue about what procedure you are talking about. |

To edit registry entries, go to Start - Run and type "regedit." This will open up the registry with standard folder heirarchy on the left. Navigate down to the path Britannica suggested (HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main) and find click on the "Main" folder. The entries will appear on the right. You can right click and delete the one he recommends. |

Sorry I wasn't clear.
BTW: When you say it worked, are you referring to mk's explaination making the steps clear or the above fixing the IE issue?
Just wondering if the above took care of the issue for you (and the OP).
