I'd be interested to see what people are using too!

undutchables.
yahoo groups //groups.yahoo.com/group/canondigicamhacking/?yguid=152793643 has both hacks, info, support and more.

i did it mostly for the flash exposure compensation, but like the ability to have RAW in basic modes and being able to use the SET button for a shortcut to quality. Mirror lockup is cool, but i have not used it.

i use undutchables, can't remember where i downloaded it. i use the customized SET button feature, higher ISO (but rarely), mirror lockup, and change the size of the jpeg embedded in raw

undutchables, mostly for the FEC, mirror lockup, and the Raw thing.

When ya say you change the jpeg in the raw, are you making it bigger or smaller and why?
07/30/2005 10:19:41 PM · #8
I make it the smallest size possible in order to free up more space on the memory card. I always convert the RAW, so I don't see much of a point in taking up more space with a Large/Fine JPEG.

OK... I got the undutchables hack. However with the EZ series flash I'm using, I don't get FEC. It works with the on board flash though. Also, the second curtain sync doesn't work with either on board or EZ flash. Am I SOL until I can afford an EX flash?

Thanks! That's kinda what I figured...

Does the Undutchables hack have a first and 2nd curtain flash feature too? I never knew this! Maybe I should check it out!

I tried out the Wasia hack on my rebel, downloaded from the //www.gpi.dk/300d/ site, and it would occasionally cause my camera to freeze up. No big deal really, all I had to do was switch the mode-dial to another mode and it would be OK again, but still an annoyance. I reverted back to the canon firmware. Someday I'll probably get the undutchables hack, I've just been too lazy latly.

I had the undutchables hack, and it worked perfectly. The AI-Servo mode not working was a major dissapointment.

Yeah you need the EX to work fully with the rebel :(
there is only 2 flashes that really work 100% with the rebel series and they are both ex series.

what about the Sigma super DG, and the promaster 7500DX (originally designed specifically for the rebel)?

So second curtain sync SHOULD work with the EX?

oh btw i'm selling a promaster 7500DX... works fine with the rebel, but wasn't compatible with the 1D. PM me if anyone is interested.

Does the Rebel know to use it for fill light in AV mode? Does it work with second curtain sync with the hack? I'm very frustrated with the EZ that I have. I didn't think I'd have to do everything manual like...

I cannot test it out for the first question... but it has a sync switch on the flash unit itself. So yes to the second one.

I don't know about hte promaster flashes. I use a Metz 54 MZ4 on my 300D. With the undutchables FEX works just fine - it works like regular expsure compensation= however you must know how canon's various modes with with a flash:
P mode - camera assumes flash is the main light, exposes for the subject, BG may be dark or underexposed. Shutter is generally locked at 1/60 sec.
Av and Tv - exposure is set for BG/ambient light. Regular exposure comp and FEC BOTH will effect the final exposure. Using the * will set the exposure lock (using a pre flash) and allowing you ro recompose. This should essentially ALL be fill flash - it mainly depends on how much ambient light there is... In Av mode the shutter speed MAY go as low as 30 seconds. The hack has a custom function that is supposed to make it go no lower than 1/200 sec.

M mode - the flash attempts to light it all up - if it cannot generate enogh light, you get a bad pic (underexposed). You can look at the light meter to avoid over exposre (it will show ambient light). My expereince is to avoid going more than 2 stops below the correct non-flash exposure.

Second curtain sync is set in the flash unit, not the camera itself, hack or not.

The 1D has a custom function where you can set the curtain sync in camera. Of course you can override it on the flash. (at least it seems to work so far)

I use the last waisa hack. The Unductable adds features available on Program mode to basic modes and doesn't really add anything that the waisa doesn't have.

This doesn't make sense to me... If it was only set on the flash unit, why would there be a setting in the camera...
