And if the the D70 only last between 10k and 40k probably some people who ues it for commercial purposes must recarculate the prices to compensate te small camera life.

I'm in a similar situation, my short term plan is to buy a D50 (or D70) for my wife and use that as a back-up for any commercial work. In the longer term I would like to get a D2X but that will depend on how much money I make from photography between now and upgrade then.

Hi Guys,
The only problem I am experiencing with my D70 so far is the following:

On shutterspeeds slower than 1/8 the mirror does not lock up all te way, causing the bottom half of the pic too be dark. This does not happen all the time, but freqeuntly enough too really p#@@ me off!
Except for that, no problems so far.
Hope my local technician can fix it, seeing that I bought it in NYC in Dec. 2004, and are now living back in South Africa again. (Dont think my warranty will mean Doody here)

A couple things, if your camera is still under warranty, send it in for a cleaning and have them check the metering system. When mine went bad, I did not hesitate to buy a second D70. Everything I have read on this issue, point to the issue being with the first release of the cameras. It does not seem to be a common issue with the camera manufactured after Sept 2004.

As for the S3 Pro, they are not problem free. I guy I work with bough one for his wedding business and within a month he had to have it replaced with a new one. I forget what the problem was, but it was bad enough to have to replace the camera.

No camera or manufacturer are without their own problems. =)

yesterday i turned the cam on in the afternoon after having let it sit for about 6 hours. it took about 10 seconds to boot up. the rest of the afternoon i turned it off and on and it worked fine.

this morning i turned it on after again letting it sit overnight. same thing. i counted 11 blinks before the top display came on.

there have been different cards, but the same battery. part of me wants to chalk it up to the battery, but i don't really see a need for a 2nd one and really don't have the money to buy one right now. grr!

also, after it happened yesterday afternoon, i went straight to the local camera shop where they all looked at me like i was crazy (because, of course, it was working by then). none of them have ever heard of it.

i am going to do some more research online and see if this is a different issue than the green light of death. i'm still irritated and freaked out.

yes, of course it's out of warranty. chris: it really took you 2 months to get your cam back? i have a wedding party to shoot in september (i guess i can rent a body for that, but still....)

I sent mine in on the 8th of July...says in shop at this time...so hopefully next week it will be back.
Rob: there are some other reported things, such as, some connectors between circuit boards wiggling loose and causing problems. The one I read (can't remember wehre, but think it was dpreview) the guy unscrewed some screws lfited the body or a panel and there it was.

@Rob - With all the haggling it took two months. Once Nikon had it, they responded with the cost for repair quickly. Then my local dealer went to his rep and they went back and forth for awhile, then I guess the decision was made to fix it for no cost and it showed back up at the shop fixed yesterday.

I would say the actual repair turn-around would have been about two weeks, had I just sent it to them to fix and send back.

This was going through the NY service center. I hear the one in CA takes longer, but I don't know from experience.

Well, through the in shop faze...says it is in the Bill stage, which means, since there is no bill, should be on its way today?! We shall see.
Broke on 07/02/2005, sent on the 6th, recieved on the 8th, Harrasing them to fix it, In shop on the 20th, billed July 27th,...waiting.
So far from broken to return I am guessing a month. In their hands 3 1/2 weeks.

This is good to know, I have been following this thread. I downloaded OpandaEXIF to check my shutter count and it is just under 10k. I will be supremely pissed if it takes a dive. I LOVE MY CAMERA THOUGH!!!

Well, I've got 10,843 shutter releases. While on a road trip through California a couple weeks ago I had the shutter open but not close. I turned it off, turned it back on, then off again, took off the lens, put it back on, turned it on, hit the shutter button again and it finally closed. That's the only time it happened, so hopefully it was just a freak thing. I'll be watching it closely now that I know I'm over 10k.

Alright she is back!!!! UPS delivered it today!! WOOHOO!! Still says bill on the service site though. Clean as a whistle, except for the specks up (somewhere) in the eyepiece.

Mine's still in the shop, hoping I'll have it by next weekend. Nikon is fixing it for free though.

If it's still under warranty, you might want to send it in for a good cleaning and check up, Andi.

Did the bill come back with a zero balance?

It did...after the few emails I sent with links to many discussions on how this seems to be a manufacturing problem, and possibly should have been recall to fix. Not to mention me harping on the problem that it was in just about a year ago and this wasn't repaired.

Now it's my turn to cry...my year was up in April and I shot over 6000 frames by now. I'm glad, in a way, that the problem isn't just me, but damn, I have to fall back on my ol' CoolPix 990?! I might just lose my mind! Anyone have any experience with service in Los Angeles area? What's the cost? I don't remember where I saw ~$120 US, looking at so many forums...[sigh]

Hi - I am new here. I am so glad I found this site. Surprise surprise, I have a D70 that bombed on me a month or so ago. I bought it when it first came out (March 04) and have been shooting non stop since then. :) Just my luck, it is out of warranty, so naturally, I panicked.
I was glad to see there were others with a similar purchase date that were having issues. I've taken about 6,500 pictures, but I wasn't expecting to have it crash on me in just over a year. Aah!

I was taking some pictures of my son when the green light started blinking. Rather than write what everyone else did when they got their blinking lights, I'll just say "dito" - nothing worked. I emailed Nikon and they told me to adjust some settings on my camera, and of course, that didn't work. After researching it a bit, I found that I wasn't the only one. So, I sent it in to Nikon and they are repairing it. I sent it to the NY facility in early July. They received it and posted the status on their website. You have to stay on top of them, because it will just sit there. Today is Aug 12th and it was shipped yesterday (they told me it was shipped a week ago). Grr. Texas is a long way from NY, so they say it will be here by Tuesday next week.

Anyway, I wanted to post this because my letter I received from Nikon said the cost would be 0.00 and was covered under warranty. Okay, I won't argue with that. I should get it on Tuesday, so I am hoping it is back up and running and ready to go. I have missed almost two months of pictures of my boys! Good luck to those who are in need of repair. So far, it has been an easy (but slow) process. I am just glad to get my camera back! :)

Has anyone had problems like these with the D70s? I just got mine a couple days ago (with a 5 year parts and labor warranty for $100 extra). I'm really glad I spent that extra money now, but I was just curious if Nikon worked out some of these flaws for the D70s.

The issue was solved with every D70 camera produced after sept 2004. Not every camera before that has problems. The D70s should not have this problem.

I sent mine in to the LA facility (literally a 20 minute drive from me) a week ago. Did they call you with a ref number to use at the web site? How were you notified and how long did that take? This sucks. :(

How do you find out how many shutter releases your camera has had??
08/13/2005 08:29:20 AM · #72
No, unfortunately, they didn't call or even email (I included a nice letter when I shipped my camera and asked that they email me). They sent a letter via snail mail with an order number and explanation of what the repair level was (mine was a B2 - minor repair with major parts replaced). I called Nikon, however, before I got the letter. If you do call, be ready for extreme wait times (15-30 minutes). After the camera was there 2 weeks, I left a message with the person and asked her to get in contact with the technician and call me back. She did call back several days later and let me know that she talked to the service dept. and gave me an update on the status. She was very nice and I was impressed she actually returned my call. :)

Yes, this was an unfortunate thing to happen to my camera, but I felt like Nikon took care of it with very little problem (slow, but they got the job done). I have always owned Nikon products, so this little glitch would not prevent me from buying another Nikon.

I have not received my final letter from Nikon, but when I do, I'll be happy to post the problem specifics IF they list it.

I purchased my D70 New in April of 2005. How can I tell if I got the good batch? I also "gambled" and spent an extra 100 bucks on the extended warranty.

*weep*

i finally bit the bullet and called Nikon about my issue (see previous posts). i sent it into Melville yesterday. hopefully i will have some answers soon.

it never did totally DIE, but the frequency of the 30-second startup time was increasing. and it started doing a new trick the other day: i put a freshly charged battery in and after 30 shots it claimed the battery was out of juice. i popped the battery case open and then shut it, and it worked like a champ. it's done this with each of my batteries now, so it's definitely something in-camera.

no clue yet how much they are going to charge me, but it had better be $0 because this is a known defect. my cam has been out of warranty since march, but i'm going to argue argue argue about it.

and don't forget that most of the time your credit card offers you some buyer's protection as well, often extending the warranty by an extra year (or more). if nikon is going to try and charge me for this, i'm going to pursue that route as well.

and now, i'm without camera. i feel so..... naked. :)

I know how ya feel!
Did you get the Nude III shot prior to your NEW nakedness? (C:
