I'm about to make a major (for me) purchase from B&H. I currently have:
- Canon Digital Rebel 350D XT
- Canon EFS 18-55 (kit lens)
- Canon 50mm f/1.8 II
My shopping list:
- Canon EF 100mm f/2.8 USM Macro
- ET-67 lens hood for the 100mm macro
- 52mm to 58mm macro coupler
- Canon EF 17-40mm f/4L USM
- Hoya 77mm circular polarizer (for the 17-40 wide angle)
- Vertical grip
- RC-1 wireless remote
- RS-60E3 remote switch
- Slik Pro 700DX tripod (w/quick release plate, tripod case, and short center column for low angle shots)
This is specifically for a 2-week car trip across the western part of the USA (and the future, obviously).
B&H wants $1795 for the whole thing (including shipping). Can anyone poke any specific holes in this list?

I'm salivating! Do they make wireless remotes for the 20D? By the way, the grip is great but I find myself not using it sometimes. It's great for portraits shots though. I still keep mine handy :) |

Strangely enough, I can't find one. The RC-1 Remote Control seems to work for 10D but not 20D. |

No lens over 100mm? Ouch - I love me some zoom, especially for portraits, animals and everyday shooting. LOVE me some zoom. I'd toss a 75-300mm tamron on there for $150 if nothing else.

Well, I have the Canon EF 70-200 f/4L USM on my wishlist, but I kind of thought that if I had to choose, I'd do more wide angle and macro during the trip. I'm still thinking of adding that one, though. Just haven't really committed to adding the extra $600. |

I can't comment on most of that stuff. But I can say that the 100mm macro is my main lens. I love it!!!. Great for portraits and as you would expect macros. Its got an extra two stops compared to all my other lenses so I use it a lot at dusk when it really counts. So you can't go wrong with this one. As for zoom. I guess it really depends on what you plan to shoot, I have a EF 100 - 300mm F4 but really have need to shoot with it, but its nice to have when movement is restricted. |

Correction: That remote doesn't work with the 10D.

If you have a money issue about the $600 now, get the Tamron I suggested, when you get home, sell it for $130 on FredMiranda and eat the $20 bucks for the ability to have zoom on the trip.

Well, I'm spending enough already. I might just buy the Canon and get it over with. I'm noticing that it doesn't seem to have a tripod mount. Just buy the external one? |

The F4L isn't that heavy, so no collar needed. The honkin' 70-200 2.8L IS needs one, it weighs more than my 20D I think. (I had the f4L before buying the 2.8L).
The Tamron XR lens isn't a bad performer, for a zoom that does 35-300ish? Inexpensive. But the f4L is a gorgeous portrait lens besides the usual stuff one shoots with a zoom.

Have you considered the Tamron 90mm macro lense? I have heard many great things about it and the pictures are astonishing! |

-Have you considered Beachcamera.com? Rates higher than B&H and are generally cheaper. On some accessories they offer free shipping. My lens came via 2day Fed Ex for free and about $40 cheaper than B&H.
My shopping list:
- Canon EF 100mm f/2.8 USM Macro
Tamron 90mm is optically same according to a review I saw with images for comparison on Photonet (I think) and it's cheaper
- ET-67 lens hood for the 100mm macro
Tamron includes a hood I think
- Canon EF 17-40mm f/4L USM
Same about Tamron 17-35mm but faster and cheaper
- Vertical grip
For landscapes???
- RC-1 wireless remote
Would recommend only the remote switch b/c you have to face the camera with the wireless to set it off. Besides, why have two remotes?

If you bought the Tamron combo from Beachcamera.com and skipped some of the accessories, I'd bet you can save about half a grand.
Have I poked enough holes?

Those are very fine holes!! OK, I will respond to a couple of them:
-Tamron 90mm: Is $10 MORE expensive than the Canon
-Tamron 17-35: WOW! I looked. Specs seem similar. $200 cheaper for the Tamron.
-Vertical Grip: No, not really for landscapes. But if you look at my portfolio, you'll find a LOT of vertical shots. For some reason, I take more verticals than horizontals.
-Wireless Remote: OK, good call. Didn't realize it was only for being in front of the camera.
Thanks for the holes. I'll do some research and comparisons between the lenses now.

At B&H, Canon 100mm macro is $470 for US model, $450 for Grey Market model (no factory warranty). Tamron 90mm USA model with warranty is $450 with 6 year warranty after the current rebate. Tamron also includes free hood and case. I'd bet a hood from Canon costs atlest $20-30 bucks.
If you need vertical grips, then you need them. I'd also recommend getting a second aftermarket battery for it as well.
I have the RC-1 remote, and I wish I had a wired remote instead for the reason I told you. If you want to get in on the shot, you can use a self timer instead of the wireless remote.
My personal feeling is that a cheap USA made CPL from S&W on ebay is just as good as Hoyas (I have both).
P.S. I would recommend looking at the new Sigma 150mm f2.8 EX DG macro as well. Similar price, more magnification and excellent review at Popular Photography.

I just picked up a Canon Rebel XT from www.buydig.com.
I bought just the body for $755.00 including taxes and shipping.
Downside: Silver body.
They deliver fast too. |
