I pay circa $5.80 a gallon for petrol/gas.

How much of that is a tax? Are you paying for the gas or the right to buy it along with helping your fellow citizens and government by paying an exorbitant tax. I really don't know but my gut feeling says you are not paying more per gallon to the oil company's.
Please don't jump on me for this. I was just wondering what the price might be without a tax or duty or levy whatever you call it. Do you really pay more if there was no tax.
I do not consider paying more for a tax the same as paying more for a service or item. You made your governments and can change them if need be and any tax they put upon you was wrought by your or your county mans hands or your inability to avert governments eventual growth.
Then again I could be wrong.:)
